Align 450L dominator 6s first build
So all my previous helis have been rtf or bnf. This is my first kit. I am a mechanic by trade and just graduated aircraft maintenance school, so I am mechanically inclined. However, I'm not going to pretend i know everything and would appreciate any tips, tricks, help, guidance, links, or info anyone would be willing to give. Thanks!

You should be fine, with a mechanical/engineering back ground, you'll breeze it through. Just take your time, clean off any dirt/oil/grease on the screws or other parts, allow to dry, apply good quality threadlock etc etc. Stuff you already know. If you get stuck some where just start a new thread, the guys here provide great support. Good luck and enjoy.

Align 450L dominator 6s first build
A few tips from my experience with the kit.
1. Do not over tighten the tail links (the plastic pieces connecting the slider to the blade grips). If you do the tail will bind. Thread lock needs to be applied with a stick to the hole to make sure it does not go in the bushings else it will bind. Test the assembly by attaching one link at a time for binding. 2. Connect the tail grips with trailing edge configuration (ie the link controls the trailing edge of the blades). That will give you equal throws each way. If you do it as the manual suggests it will not have equal travel and the tail performance would not be as good 3. Mount the gyro in the bottom plate as its where vibrations are the least. Be careful for the gyro not to touch the side frames and the metal landing gear support 4. The 68mm tail fins are a bit large and you will hit them on the ground when landing. Would recommend swapping for the 62mm Carbon fins from align or add shims to the landing gear on the back side of the heli to tilt it forward and give more clearance to the tail. Alternatively you are risking stripped torque tube gears 5. Order a second torque tube bearing and use it. You will be surprised at how much lower the vibrations will be on the tail. A must do! 6. If you do mount the gyro on the top plate you will need and servo extension lead. I had to mount my Spirit up there as it wouldn't fit in the other position. 7. Check the main blades for play. If you have any you can sim them using the Lynx 180cfx main shaft spacers I believe. I can send you a picture of the packaging when home if you need to 8. Get the MIP 1.5mm hex drivers. If you even look at the screws on the front tail box the wrong way they will strip. Alternatively replace them with 2.5mm button head screws from the optional hardware bag. I've got one screw stripped that I cannot remove now so save yourself the grief 9. Get a 10t slant pinion off eBay. The default 11t will be a bit crazy for you I believe but that's personal preference

I went with the landing gear and tail fin from the 500L to get the tail a bit higher.
Agree on second torque tube bearing, 10t pinion and get MIP drivers. - CoolBear |

Hi man,
thanks for your input. Could you explain this: 2. Connect the tail grips with trailing edge configuration (ie the link controls the trailing edge of the blades). That will give you equal throws each way. If you do it as the manual suggests it will not have equal travel and the tail performance would not be as good English is not my native language and I am not sure what you are trying to explain. Thanks a lot. Marcus |

Thanks for the tips. The YouTube video i was watching on the assembly mounted the gyro on the bottom as well. These directions in the manual are all but worthless. |

Yes I've seen your mod in the Spirit forum too, works & looks great but if I wanted to get the usb connected and disconnected for setup it looks like it can be a pain. How do you do this?

I run a servo extention from the Spirit SYS port to outside the frame. You can see it in the upper right of the first picture.

A question on #2- I noticed when built as designed the slider is way off set at neutral giving a lot of unequal throw. Which is what you say. For such a new design why in the world haven't' they designed this out? |

Yesterday afternoon I got my first Align 450l dominator 6s and also first build!
I build step by step for 3 hours but I still have a lot to do ... The Manual are very poor instructions ... Today after work I will build a little more it's fun but sometimes complicated! Any more advice will be appreciated! |

Should have put the tail box in before putting both frames together - you'll almost have to fully unscrew one side to put it in now align should have included that in the right order in their instructions..

I've used deans on the 450L because the gens ace lipos I used come with deans pre
Soldered. I think ec5 might be too big but I'll let others comment. I'm using EC5 on my goblin 500 where current requirements are higher. Possibly ec3 for the 450? Soldering them is really simple - put the bullet on a holder of some sort heat up with the soldering iron, fill up the bullet with solder and without removing the iron push in the wire. Hold the iron for a few seconds there to make sure the solder fluxes properly in the wire. Remove the iron and let it cool. Push in the connector and you're done. Personally I'd use some electrical tape to insulate one battery lead while working on the other to prevent sorting them out and frying your new battery! PS. If you do take the side frame off is recommend you finish off the wiring with the frame off as it will make tying the wires down much easier.

I guess is the EC5 I have searched online and find this one. ..I will search for ec3 before buy one .. Also I guess I need both male and female ?!?! Or just male .. Next time I will buy battery that comes with connectors to avoid the trouble! Lol
Now I'm confused with glue a have to use on the tail boom ... In the kit comes T22 for the screws, I have R-48 and T-43 also I have searched that some guys use Loctite 222 that is the same as T22! Well ... I have a lot to learn !! Step by step and doing mistakes I will learn :0) |

Are you talking about glueing the bearing to the torque tube? If so, that is done with CA glue I've used the included locktite throughout the kit and it works good. You won't need anything else I'm guessing the ESC has no connectors on so you'll need both male and female. Also an extra male one for your charging cable (possibly). If you're going to buy batteries that have connectors soldered on, do a scan now and check what's the most popular connection or at least the connector that the brand you like have pre installed. Then you can standardise on that connector (that's what I did with deans)

Yes ! I glued the bearing to the torque tube 13mm from the middle ( half ) but I used super glue Gel (Dr. Bond) just little drop and inside the tube I put some Align bearing grease. When I inserted into the tube the bearing loosened, so... I did again with more grease and it got through !! And had enough for the day! Lol You right.. The ESC has no connectors soldered on, I have to figure out which connectors to buy actually I have to buy 3 pairs I think 2 males and 1 female and more extras just in case if I make mistakes!!! Thank you very much for the advices ! I'm sure I will need more help later on ! 😎 |

If you're going with ec5 connectors hobbyking has a great price for 5 pairs. Ec5 is a little big for a 450 but it will work fine. Ec3s are a pain in the ass to disconnect imo.
As far as soldering ec5 connectors get a pen torch. They're $20 at Home Depot. You do want to tin the esc/battery leads before soldering them into the bullet. Here's a quick video showing how. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...e_Female_.html
