GPS1 vs. GPS2
What's the advantage of using the GPS2? I read the info on the website, but want real time user comments.
I assume it will work with my Black 720? I just read the info on Skookum's site. Quote:

Yes, GPS2 works with Black 720. The major improvement you will notice is that the GPS2 doesn't loses its satellite lock as often as GPS1. GPS1 was useless where I fly (Sao Paulo - Brazil) but GPS2 is working flawless with my Black 720. Carlos |

I asked the same question a while ago. The responce I got was that the GPS 2 doesn't loose satilite lock as much as the GPS 1, same as mentioned above but also the refresh rate is higher with the GPS2.
Myself, I haven't had any issues with my 2 GPS 1 units, but I guess that is probably due to where I fly. But I am thinking about getting a GPS 2 unit. Will just keep an eye out for a second hand one.

I would be interested to know why geographical location would have any effect unless you were closely surrounded by extremely high terrain?
I have a GPS 2 but I am looking at a GPS1 for a Goblin 700 as I can't see how I can fit a GPS2. SLL

Hi Mate,
It is a hit or miss thing, so your best chance is to research other pilots in your area (or at least in Australia) using the GPS1 and see what are their experiences. Here in Brazil, there are only a few handful of Skookum users, and AFAIK, only me and a friend who lives 1000 kms apart uses GPS. We both experienced the same issues with the GPS1. Carlos |

SLL, trying to answer your question, when I started to research about the issues I was having with GPS1, I first thought that the reason would be the fact that satellite network over South America didn't offer the same coverage as it does in US, but then I read a post from a fellow experiencing the same issues where he lives in Hawaii, I changed my mind.
After using the GPS2 for almost a year, I remember one day that it lost the GPS lock a couple of times, but other than that, its performance has been consistent which makes me believe that the hardware on GPS1 wasn't fully tested worldwide before of its launching. GPS2 seems to have corrected the issues (at least for those living in affected areas). I did a search for "gps coverage Australia" and found good reading at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2008372 These are the posts that caught my attention: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...t=2008372&#r17 http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...t=2008372&#r18 Carlos |

Actually, Art ran the gps1 through vigorous testing throughout as much of the globe as possible. Actually setting back its release quite a ways (in which he was heavily taking fiscal losses) until he was sure he had a product 'most' could trust when it came out. You can only make it as good as it can be at any cost with the existing tech at the time.
The gps2 hardware wasn't available yet. It is decidedly superior in many ways. There are areas in our world where even military grade gps has its issues for half a dozen different reasons.
