Default Free Align ESC: Only Burned Once

What now?

This stupid helicopter sucks.

I took off and realized my gyro rate was too high. I landed, disconnected the battery, adjusted the gryo rate on the TX, and reconnected the battery. I was waiting for the thing to arm while I flipped burgers on the grill. I looked over and my heli was on fire.

Did I do something wrong?

I didn't mention it in my first post but I'm wondering if it is a defective ESC or a counerfit . I've read of counterfits

Was it zip tied to the heli frame? If you fasten an ESC to the frame with nothing between then the shrink wrap can "wear out" so that you get contact with the frame. A cf frame will lead current.

It sure looks like an Align ESC, Where have you heard of counterfeit Align ESCs Jermo?

Out on a limb again not being native to the english language, but I isn't the word counterfeit. Isn't counterfit a band or something?

counterfit means copy but not real one. I don't know if that is copy or not. I read many forums. Anything about the T-Rex450. One of the forums was the same about ESC failure. The person sent the ESC back to be told it was not Align but a copy. Again I don't know if your ESC is copy or real. It's probably real. I just wanted to mention the possibility. If you purchase your T-Rex450 from reputable dealer then it's is real align esc.

I know counterfeit means copy...but I was wondering about the word counterfit, if I do a search then: Counterfit was an American rock band from San Diego, California, formed in September 1999

I thought the problem was with grey market Align products, not counterfeits. They're made by Align, but didn't go through the proper channels so they can be had for cheap. Align do not warranty those products.

It was tiewrapped directly to the frame with no foam in between. The new ESC has foam and velcro to hold it in-place.

My 35X on/from my newV2 just did the same thing in the same area. I flew one flight, landed, switched the battery, plugged in the ESC, and then when I applied throttle I saw smoke. I have a total of about 25 or 30 flights on the heli and the heli has never been crashed or landed hard. I had it secured down with velcro and it was sitting on the plastic tray so there is no chance that mine was caused because of shorting. Noel from Alignrcusa told me to send it back to them for them to look at.

Interestingly one of the leads came unsoldered at the ESC end. I don't know if the lead had a bad solder joing and came undone causing the ESC to short our or if something else was wrong which caused it to heat up so much that it came unsoldered. My guess would be a bad solder joint.

I am flying my old V1 night setup now until I get a replacement ESC.

If I can find my camera I'll post a pic but it looks very similar to yours.

Here's the mounting:

The place where it burned was not on the edge of the tray or anything. But who knows.

Can you take pictures with the heatshrink completely removed? It'd be interesting to see what blew. If the MCU doesn't come up properly it can activate both the high and low side mosfets, essentially putting a dead short across the battery. Poof! (A lot of the ESC's use Atmel MCU's and use the built in brownout/power supervisor function to 'properly' bring up/reset the MCU.)

Looks like the BEC burned out (that is the area of the ESC that holds the BEC)! If that is the case you have binding or a bad servo that is over heating the BEC!
If you get a new one... I bet you a dollar unless you solve the issue, you will burn out a new one.
