Default Main Grips Vertical Play

After I replaced my main grip bearings about 20 flights ago, grips have the most vertical play I've ever noticed. Probalby about 1mm. But, I had a few flights today, and it feels fine in the air.

The spindle bolts are tight. Could the inner diameter tolerances of the bearings be off? I'm wondering if I should go back and change the spindle and/or dampers. Anyone run into this problem lately?

I have had this before on one side & it was due to the bearings so I put another new bearing in & it was fine. Hope you get it fixed.

I replaced the spindle last night, and it has improved. Maybe the spindle tolerances were slightly different for the bearings I was using. For installing the bearings I used an arbor press.

No no no no !! Use heat. I drop any part that needs a bearing removed into the oven (350f I think). Let the part sit in the oven and get up to temp, then just tap the bearing out on a wood block, then slide the new bearing in before the part cools. Once you force a bearing out the grip will never be the same again.

No, the arbor press works great IMO. Obviously you must use it correctly to get the best results.

Either way, with the new bearings on my grips, I think the bearings went in almost no force. It also does not seem to relate to the current issue; or is there more you are haven't said yet?

As a test, I checked a new set of uninstalled bearings on the old spindle. The amount of play felt identical. So, maybe I am just being overly critical, or there was something weird about that spindle. I wonder if 1/100mm difference in the diameter would be noticeable, cause my calipers read the same size between the two.

When you force the bearings in and out you distort the alum that holds the bearings, which means when you install the new bearing its never held all that well.
