Kosmik + ProgUnit: hitting a brick wall - solved
Update: see message #2.
Following the ProgUNIT instructions at http://www.kontronik.com/images/stor...015-02-24.pdf: to the letter: 5. PC Program K-KONFIGDone. ProgUNIT is flashing, all right - rapid flashing for about 4 seconds, then one flash a second, roughly. Connect your ESC and power it up.Done. Except for the spark at battery contacts, no observable effects. Start the K-KONFIG program. The following sreen willThe screen displayed is *not* the screen expected. This is what I see: Well, if I press "OK", the next thing I see is the K-Konfig screen with all values zeroed out. What am I doing wrong? The unit initializes normally, recognizes the cell count, powers the FBL and spins the motor just fine. The only other abnormal thing that I know about it is that it corrupts the SD card every time it runs. In other cases, the first thing I would do would be to try and update the ProgUNIT firmware, but that also fails miserably - but that's a topic for another thread, I'm afraid.

See, this is exactly the kind of thing that makes my blood boil, and makes me think WHAT people writing the documentation were thinking.
The procedure that resulted in K-Konfig finally working was exactly the *opposite* of what was documented (mind you, twice, by both the manual and the application): 1. Start K-Konfig on the PC 2. Power the ESC (with Rx connections disconnected) 3. Plug ProgUNIT into ESC 4. Plug USB into ProgUNIT I really resent wasting my time on playing this "where's Waldo" game - no matter how good the controller finally turns out to be, nobody's going to give me back the time I'd rather have spent doing something else.

Your heli experience will be much, much, much better if you learn to google and watch youtube videos. I don't even bother with instructions. Just go to youtube and type in what you're looking for. Almost without fail someone out there has a video tutorial on exactly what you're trying to do. I know for a fact there's a few videos for the kosmik/prog unit.

Difficult to accept for me, coming from the engineering background, where things not documented right can cost a lot. Even more puzzling given the fact that the <censored> application itself gives instructions that are contrary to the actual procedure, by means of all-interrupting-ultimately-intrusive dialog box. Still, the fact that the instructions are the opposite of what actually needs to be done, means to me that someone's getting a paycheck they don't deserve.

Yes, their instructions are terrible. Barely understandable at best, and flat out wrong at worst.
The instructions for the prog unit have a flaw in them that caused me a minor crash. (capacity cutoff) Supposedly that flaw is being fixed, and supposedly someone is supposed to be making sure the instructions overall improve.

Actions speak louder than words - I'll see what they come up with, and how soon. Till then, someone else will be getting my dollars.

This video should really be a sticky for new users. I agree, reading the K manuals is like trying to read your 3rd grader's science paper. If it wasn't for forum members here writing step by step stickies and helping others, I don't think I would have bought a Kosmik. I'm still waiting on the iOS Bluetooth apps to release for over a year now.

And here's another vid I found on changing BEC voltage via the PC software. Not the greatest vid but does a good job showing the plug-in procedure.

So bad...
Hey Madeye
Thanks for this thread... the documentation could not be worse. For a $900 ESC (200HV) it's shameful that Kontronic, haven't improved this. It baffles the mind that a $900 speed controller with a USB port on it, can't be updated unless you buy a $90 ProgLink controller. (?!) No way to adjust BEC voltages, no way to change any settings aside from "Heli mode"... My controller won't write any log files... and I'm stuck without the ProgLink until it ships early this week. Not the end of the world, but still... WTF. |

See if this is the issue you're having: https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=689839 Oh, btw, just saw the message Kontronik posted about the list of compatible SD cards - the one that came with my unit is among them (4GB Class 4), and it doesn't work.

Kontronik have also released a V4.5.1 that has supposedly fixed the problem with writing logs.
If you are having issues try updating the firmware to this version and see how you go. Oh, when you get your Progunit that is.

wir keine stinkenden USB nicht brauchen
Thanks guys...
I tried re-formatting the card using the SDcard format utility. Still no go. I don't have any other uSD cards here at home. I might run out and get one tonight to try to see if that works. So, Wh1teAfr1can, I have to ask... WTF is the "USB" port for on the side of the unit? The fact that it's not mentioned ANYWHERE that you need a separate controller to do any configuration aside from "Heli Mode" is highly misleading and frustrating to the end user. Is Dr. Strangelove doing Kontronik's marketing? I sure hope this POS is worth the $850 that I spent on it. So far, it has spun up the motor at 14S, but that's about it. Arguably it has done that reliably. |

The USB port on the unit is for factory use only. The governing is worth every penny

$900 ESC (200HV)
The prices have just recently been increased. The Cool Kos 200 is now $975....among their other ESC's |

Just FYI,
I used another 16GB card that I had at the office and the logging works now. My programming dongle should come this week, although it's baffling as to why they would go through the expense of having a fully decorated USB connector on the device to load flash at the factory. That's what a bed of nails is for, or JST connector at the worst. I'm suspecting it's one of those features that never got around to being finished. |
