Default 500SE vs. 550SX

I currently have a Protos 500 and was looking for my next bigger heli. I wanted to try and stay 6S so I think the largest I'm looking for is a 550 size. Size wise that limits my choices to the Align 550 DFC, Blade 550X, and the Logo helis. I'm leaning more towards Logo and was wondering what the big differences were between a 500SE and the 550SX. I saw that the 500SE can use up to 600 mm blades. The 550SX super combo is priced nicely but I've seen a few used 500SE setups in the for sale section that were also very well priced.

Is it worth the price to get the 550SX kit? I'll probably be selling off the VBar from the super combo to swap in my HC3SX.

Thanks for the info!

Mark

New Mikado Logo 550SX! (7 min 23 sec)

Kyle runs through all the differences in this vid...
I don't really see a reason to go to the 550 unless you need uber performance...

I think you need to decide if you are going new or used and then that will make your decision for you. If you are buying new, then IMO there is no other choice out of the Logo 500 line that's better than the 550SX

I personally would NEVER run 600mm blades on a 500SE on 6s so IMO there's no reason to buy that over the new 550.

Just one man's opinion though

Sgrim80, glad that's only your opinion, as many people run 600mm blades on the 500se and only use a 6s pack, and love the heli that way.

First question I would ask the thread starter,is what sort of flying will you be doing with your new heli.

If you want full on 3d then 550mm blades is the way to go, and maybe the 550sx is best. But if you fly sport, aerobatics and light 3d - then I would recommend the 500se with 600mm blades.

Regards,

David

I'm actually still just learning on my Protos....mostly practicing circuits and inverted flying. Every once in a while I might try a loop. I don't think I'll be doing any 3D for a long while.

For that type of flying, a 500SE swinging 603 blades at a reasonable "sport" head speed of say 1800 on 6S, will give the performance you need, and long flights as well. Autos will be fantastic when you get to that stage as well, as the 500SE is lightweight, under a large 600mm disc.

The 550SX won't support 600mm blades. It's a 550 heli only, more slanted for aggressive 3D performance demands.

Also look at Synergy E5 in this size.
Thing is built tough, 700 class gear train and tough frames.
Great for beating on or less than perfect auto's/landings.

I love my Logo but much more as a 600 than a 500/550, tried both and kept 600.

I totally forgot about the Synergy E5...I looked at it a while back, but it's back on the list again.

E5 is aimed more towards a more aggressive flying style with higher head speeds than the Logo.

It has a heavier disc loading for a given blade size compared with the Logo, and therefore requires a higher head speed, and will give shorter flight times.

You've tried one David?

Yes it is heavier, mine is 2828 w/o flight pack.
At 2450 it's nut's, flies well around 22-2300. Here in winter I get 4:30 @2450 and I am over geared.
In warmer weather with a tooth less pinion I expect 5min even at same head speed.
Could likely go 6min with lower ~2250 still throwing it around.

Another consideration I had with a 550 was since I share packs with my 700 I wanted them better protected. I had crashes with the Logo where I lost 1 6S5K of a 12S pair.
Ya it gives you a dedicated pack for the 550 but loose a pair for the 700.
The E5 frames are super tough in compare, a slight trade off is extra weight over L500.

I always felt my Logo 500 was to light and got knocked around a lot. We are in a pretty windy spot though. It is a great machine, I just prefer it as a 600

Good vid here of Tony Whiteside trying to break it.

Thanks to everyone that posted.

I was debating on the Synergy E5 vs. a Logo and saw a good deal on a E5 airframe + motor on here so I picked it up. I like how easy it is to upgrade the E5 to a 600 size later on, but I'm sure I would have been happy with either heli. I've still got to piece together the electronics, so it might be a while before I can maiden her.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the E5, I'm lovin' mine.
There are stretch parts available for 600mm stretch (E5-S) or with E6 Boom,Rod,TT and Struts up to 630mm.
Also using E6/7 Tail Spur & Pinion allows option of 4.5:1 tail ratio Vs. stock 4:1. Lets you run lower head speed while keeping the tail in the >9K range.

Logo is also very versatile in ability to morph between sizes.
With available parts it can swing from 520 to 690mm.

What are the actual differences between the latest Logo 500SE and 550SX. It seems that 500SE has been updated on the imporant parts.

- 500SE has also 22mm boom as 550SX
- 500SE has new counterbearing support, same as 550SX
- Tail is longer in 500SE
- Canopy and tail fin color are different

Anything else?

Edit: In this thread there were already good discussion on differences: https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=570875
