Default Does it hurt the engine to run without blades?

I'd like to test the governor (I'm using the V-Bar governor) by running the engine at the desired headspeed without blades.

Will running with a 2000-ish headspeed without any load hurt the engine in any way?

Jotto,
There's been discussion about this before. Relative to breaking in an engine
Sure it can be done.
Personally, I wouldn't do it. Particularly if it's still in the heli. I would recommend removing the tail blades also if you possibly try this.
What aspect of the gov. are you attempting to test ?
Regards

I want to keep an eye on the headspeed and log on my PC which talks to the V-Bar via bluetooth.

The log contains some warnings about losing signal from the governor sensor after a flight.

What heli is the V-bar in?

As long as the gov is functioning in flight I would not be too worried about a few warnings. I get random Gov signal warnings and it perfroms excellent.

It's in a Velocity 50N2.

The engine stopped mid-flight the other day ( https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=412029 ), so I'm just trying to fix all the potential causes of failure. The V-Bar shouldn't stop the engine if the governor fails, but... still I think it's worth investigating whether the V-Bar has trouble reading the governor signal.

It's generally not good for a 2-stroke engine to run it at continuous high speeds without a load. A 4 stroke can handle it fairly well, but with a 2, the problem is lack of lubrication and cooling while running at the high RPMs with a closed throttle.

Don't ask me why I know this is bad.

Also, it's very easy to accidentally overspeed without a load..

personally, if it's a really good, expensive engine, I wouldn't chance it and would just run it up with blades on it...

You fixed the clunk line then and want to test right?.
What gov sensor are you using, I had the align with the small plug on,, modded to work with the vbar and had to pull the power wires out and use another port, just grabbed the throttle port above the sensor port and left the TS in the esc coll.
Test hover until the fuel is just above where the clunk line breaks out of the tank and set it down and inspect for tiny air bubbles in the line and proced to run the fuel down and then recheck. My align filter/ T for filling leaked bad from the sharp seam from the molding and had to work of getting to to seal. But an empty line like before was a real problem. No load for any time is bad, short snaps ok but not for any length of time
