Default Charger "Lipo dishcarge" feature goes to 3.0V per cell?

OK.. cycling my new 3300's a couple of times... "Lipo storage" wants to go down to 3.8V/cell and "Lipo Dishcharge" wants to go down to 3.0V/cell.

Isn't 3.0V too low? Or is that considered an empty Lipo (but still safe)

3.0 V / cell would be an overdischarge. I would not want to go lower than the nominal voltage of the cell ( 3.7 V ).

Keep a close eye on those Turnigy's.

Thanks UV Sounds like a plan. I'll stop them at 3.7v and charge to full again. I wonder how many cycles I should do before flying the new lipos? Anyone?

EDIT: I keep forgetting there is a battery forum on helifreaks.. I best be off there.. no doubt all these questions are common.

Why don't you cycle them with some short easy flights?

That would be great.

There's really no reason to loose a few cycles to cycling.

Sounds good. I'll just cycle all 4 lipos just one time.. and then do some easy flying for a few minutes each... so I can at least some flight time on their 2nd cycle.

What? 3.7v? I don't think that sounds right. Isn't 3.2v more of a safe low limit for LiPos? 3.0v is borderline.

I don't know. I just know I always fly until the resting voltage is 3.8V per cell.. maybe 3.7V.

I bought one of these... this should help.. friends got one and it's REALLY cool.

They make smaller similar units like the blinky balancer which essencially do the same thing. but for about 30 bucks, you get a reading to the 100th decimal, unlike to the thousands like this one.

as far a s i know it is safe to discharge to 3v,if the charger is accurate it should not be a problem.
have not heared abut any lipo that would get damaged with a discharge to max 3v or charged to max 4.2

if u want to get max out and want to be safe i would recomend lipodimatic to monitor each cell in the pack during flights. it makes sure no cell will drop to much under load.

i use them in all my helis. still fly with timer but some times when i fly harder then normal it is a grate insurance not to drain the pack to much

3.0 to 3.2 v/c is basically the standard for MAX safe discharge of a lipo. I never run mine below 3.7v/c when flying. To cycle them, I fly mild flights and cut my timer in half. Usually 2.5 to 2.75 min. and cycle 5 times, then let it rip. That's about what I have read over the years, with slight variations, but I have never had any problems with my lipos either. Hope you enjoy the 500, know you will.

I think 50% power would be too little for safe hovering. My buddy Nate had a great idea for breaking in new packs. He suggested setting a throttle curve for 50% at midstick and just let it sit on the ground for 5 to 10 minutes depending upon how much you want to discharge it.

An option would be to throw the packs in a plane and do some leisurely flying for about 10 minutes. I didn't have the patience to do either, I just threw the packs on the heli and went for it. Granted I'm using $18 Zippy's. If I spent $80 per battery I'd probably break them in properly.
