How long does a Scorp motor last?

I've found a LHS where I can buy three 440H motors for the price of one Scorp and pinion so I'm kinda loath to grab one. It could be cheaper in the long run to get a couple of 440's and sit them there ready for when they die and warranty any I can.

Where are you finding 3 440H motors for $60?

Pick up the CY NextD -8, it's a rebadged Scorp -8 for $55, A Main has them.

Inov8tive Designs has a selection of pinions HERE that will drop in without modification. Grab a 12 tooth for stock power.

I have countless flights on my scorpion. I'd say at least 100, maybe closer to 200. I oil it every 5 to 10 flights and I've had zero issues.

I unfortunately can't get a scorp shipped to my door under prob $90 and the cheapest I can pickup at a LHS is about $79 plus pinion. I can get 440H motors for $30 which is pretty good whilst they last. A Next D would be $10 cheaper than the scorp but as I live in Aus I have to pay quite a bit for shipping ($35 usually).

200 is pretty good isn't it!

I'd imagine I'd be able to get maybe 80 from a 440H but I noticed on my 450X that it got quite hot the other day now I'm really pushing it with a 100%TC.

I don't really want to put cash into a motor if I can help it as I'd prefer a couple of killer ESC's that I can transfer to mini Protos etc (as I'd need a scorp motor with that heli) but maybe it'll come to that regardless.

With the Scorpion motor you can replace the bearings and shaft if they go bad. So as long as you don't get it way too hot it should last a very long time. Much longer than the E-Flite motors.

Just passing around and saw the light... but...hm.. what prevents you guys from replacing the E-Flite motor shaft and/or bearings?

Also E-Flite has a newer motor called 450H 3600 which seems of way better quality and got good reviews so far.

My two cents.

One reason is that they don't sell the bearings or shafts separately, although I'm sure the bearings could be sourced from Boca, etc.

The second reason - and more importantly - is its fun to upgrade when the stock motor dies

Fair enough!

By the way I'm in the process of making a mega 450 size motors review, where over 40 different motors from all brands will be tested and compared. It might interest the readers of this thread.

But I don't know when I will complete it, because as you can imagine it's a lot of work! I'm not sure yet, but results will probably be posted in the electronics subforum, so stay tuned!

Make it in the Motors etc; forum---maybe this is the same forum you are talking about.

But don't wait too long, or the ones you have will be obsolete, and there will be a bunch of new ones!

I sadly got about 60 and mine just died about 3 weeks ago. It fell hard sadly, about 40 feet sideways while still spinning.

Pretty good damage..

To be honest, they can check the heli but I am sending it back. In a way, I feel I cannot be held responsible for a crash with no motor and giving out after about 57 perfect flights. NOT even hard 3D at all , normal 3D if that.

I dont even want to look at it.... sucks.

Sorry to hear that mate. Comisserations.

I guess with this motor (eflite 440 and probably the 420) you have to check for play and if there's any doubt about the shaft or bearing, pull it and look. I've managed to catch 2 on their way out this way.

Yep, two sets of bearings in the 1st 100 flights. The first set I put in were the Boca ceramic ones which didn't last very long at all (~25 flights). Second set of boca's plain bearings are now at 250 flights. I wish EFlite used better bearings and used thread lock. I oil them every time I fly (~7 flights).

As I've said before, it pisses me off that HH is putting this sh@#$ motor in a great heli. Too many of us have had motor failures with damage that is not operator error. I'm actually scared to fly mine with a replacement 440 h. Just think fast inverted flight FF and motor failure. The possible damage to heli. Just a way for HH to make money on parts because of crashes that are caused by poor QC. This heli can be a missle.

Just got my 450x and have been reading about this. Prior to a maiden, took the motor out to do the locktite fix, but when I tried to remove the screws from the aluminum block, the Allen head stripped. Anyone got any ideas how I can get the screws out now? Very frustrating. I put the motor back in for now so I can at least get a few flights on it, but don't want to go too long with no locktite.

Didn't you have the -8 on the stock ESC as well for a while? How did that fair?

I take it if the -6 is running fine the -8 should, it does draw less current.......
