Default Hobbywing Platinum 100A V3 temperature

Hi! Just a quick question... I own a HW Platinum 100A V3 in a Goblin 500 with BK HV servos, so BEC is set to 8,4V. I have noticed that, just plugging the battery pack, even with no electronics connected to the unit, the bottom of the unit gets hot (even very hot). I suppose that is the BEC what gets hot.

May I consider this a normal behavior? In the other hand, I have flown that bird about a dozen times, and it flights great... but this amazes me a bit.

Regards,

Jose A.

I don't know about the temperature issue, but you may want to consider dropping the BEC output voltage to the next voltage down which I believe is 7.4v. Once you go with a voltage higher than about 7.5v, you get very little improvement in torque and speed, but you expose the servos to continuous high voltage which according to Thomas (MKS distributor here in the U.S.) may negatively impact the servo lifespan.

Thanks a lot for the advice, curmudgeon. I will consider so. Next day I'll fly this bird I'll drop voltage output to 7,4 and if I don't find significant difference, I'll leave it that way.

Regards,

Jose A.

yes mine gets warm as well on the bench , that's why it's recommended to use lower voltage pack for setup ...
mostly because there is no airflow to cool things down

Thank you joliecoeur13... but that's something that worries me a bit... Does it need a given airflow to operate? I installed it where the Goblin 500 manual suggest to do it, under the pack tray... and there is no airflow there, nor room enough to install the fan. Nevertheless, I always check its temperature after every flight, and although it's really hot, is not hotter than my other ESC's.

Regards,

Jose A.

The manual for the Trex 500 sais to install the ESC under the battery tray. When I upgraded the motor and the ESC to Castle Ice 100 I set the ESC on the right CF panel just under the main gear. The wires are a bit obtrusive there but its only an aesthetical issue. The registered max temp was 38ºC so eventually I turned off the temp logging. I don't use the internal bec though but in that placement the ESC receives a stream of fresh air, thats for sure.

Default sorry wrong thread

well I finally got all my stuff together on my goblin 380, and I have no power when I connect the esc. I use a 7.4 lipo to connect to my neo and it works fine. maybe I got a bad ESC too?
