How about offering to make a donation to your local fire dept. I know of a "cough" local
"ahem " fire service that helped me out no end. I can't go into detail, but suffice to say, I would have had to pay hundreds for a crane!! Got to be worth a try surely, otherwise, Rick(rmparry) asked for the postcode LOL!!

The problem is that this is on the edge of a school playing field - they may be a bit surprised when a fire engine drives through the school, across the playing fields and starts climbing a tree in the far corner

Tell them your cat is stuck up in the tree. Here in the states the FD will respond quickly to a distressed animal. Then when they get it down, say, opps, sorry, my eyesight isn't what it used to be, thought it was my feline friend........

Haha Mike, tell them the tree was only 10 feet tall when he climbed up there, BUT, global warming musta made that thing grow like crazy over night.

Is it still up there? I had an idea, as from the pictures I would be up that tree like a freakin' monkey. Are there any rock climbing facilities in your area? Because I bet a rock climber would have no problem at least making a close attempt. You could offer 20 bucks (quid? Pounds?) to the first 18+ volunteer, and 20~30 more if they can get it down. And there you have it, someone whose specialty is climbing, is not a minor, and would do it cheap because it's not their profession quite the contrary climbers pay good money for gear and gas to get places and climb, so payment would be very enticing. Good luck, I hope you can get it down.

Yeah - I spent an hour last Sunday throwing things at it with rope tied to them, I got pretty close a few times but the branches and foliage got in the way.

Thanks for the suggestion about climbers - it could be a good option, my only reservation is that the last 20 foot o climbing would be on 4 - 6 inch branches which wouldn't support much weight.

...well, you wouldnt have to go "Out on a Limb" ...just get the wire pulling pole that extends and put a hook on the end to push the heli off the limb....If I were there in the UK I'd come over and do that for you ! You could also use PVC pipe...

I looked into the wire pulling poles, but they would cost a lot of dosh and I haven't seen any 60' long unfortunately - I sill think a ttrained monkey is the best bet

Yep, They can get pricey...the PVC you could use in your garden...
Looks like a call to a local Aborist might be another option...

Hey Mike just make sure your climber is svelte and they will be fine. I have personally climbed that high on 1 to 2 inch branches, so it can be done for sure. Those branches are quite a bit sturdier than they look. Although your reservations are well intended, it is quite high up, I bet a good climber would take it as a challenge. If you emphasize safety first you can let them judge for themselves with good conscience. Unless you find a trained monkey first, then Bob's your uncle.

I'll see if I can find any local climbing clubs - I did try searching for tree climbing clubs last weekend but couldn't find anything

Here is a suggestion Mike, not sure if it will help though.
A while back we had a nasty storm that left some neighbors kids inflatable swimming pool stuck in a tree on my property about 40 feet up. I used some 1/2 diameter by 10 foot long sections of electrical conduit and connected 4 of them together, and put a hook in the top. It is light weight stuff so easy to handle. I just threaded it up into the tree and hooked the pool and got it down.

You might be able to try something like that, I dunno.

I tried to recover a EDF from a tree about 50 feet up one time using pvc conduit and it was a failure due to the flex of the pipe once it got past 3 or 4 sections. Finally used ladders and pipe to knock it down.

does the school have a "cherry picker" type machine for handling light bulbs in their gym or similar where you can ride up in a bucket? maybe you can arrange this and then use a pole or conduit or ?

Or just get your chain saw and go after the tree, but hey I'm from the Northwest where trees are considered just large weeds.
