I used to make careful comparisons between competing products when shopping for one, especially when I'm starting at the entry level. In the case of the two radios mentioned, I would go with the DX6i just because of the wide variety of compatible BNF ultra micros. Now, that's a no-brainer.

I would hold them both to decide if I was in your shoes. My 6i KILLS my left thumb after a few flights. The Futaba will have a diff feel. The 6i feels like a big plastic toy. I have many many hours on both brands.

If you think you are going to stick with the R/C hobby save some money and go straight to the DX8 ($290 or so radio only). Buy cheap buy twice.

I fly with the futaba 6j and it is very nice for the money, and my thumbs dont have to reach to get the sticks in the corners and it fits my hands perfectly the only downside is not being able to use it with BNF models.

I like my Dx6i very much.

Another factor would be what the guys at the local club or LHS use. Using what they use will make getting help easier.

DX6i is garbage quality wise. Comparing Futaba to Spektrum is like comparing a Lexus to a Yugo.

If you must go Spektrum get a DX7s minimum. Much better quality and feel than DX6i.

And I believe the 6J can also use the latest S-bus technology?
