Who uses a separate BEC?
Since I swapped my HS65MG servos for MKS 95 servos I have noticed my Scorpion 45A ESC is really heating up. I have spikes on my servo bus voltage dropping down to 4.2V and had complete radio loss causing a crash.
I have been advised that I probably need a separate BEC so have ordered a Turnigy 5Ampone from Hobbyking. (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...for_Lipo_.html) The internal scorpion bec is rated at 3Amps. Any thoughts? How many of you are using a separate BEC and where do you mount it? Or could my esc be on its way out? No flying for a while for me until the bec arrives anyway. Nick

What kind of BEC does your Scorpion 45A have - switching or linear?

You should use a separate bec with that speed control. I think it only has a 2 amp linear bec and that speed control will run a lot cooler with a separate bec.http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Reduction.html This is the one I am using on my 450 and never had a problem.

I had the version 2 but version 3 has a 3 amp constant and 5 amp burst bec which theoretically should work.

Yes, stay away from linear BECs with anything over a 2S (7.4V) pack. With a 3S it has to drop 11.1V down to 5V and linear BECs burn that 6.1V off as heat - all of the time. Switching BECs don't do this and run much cooler.

I have ds95s on my MT and was using BEC until last weekend. I swapped my Align's 35A ESC for HeliDirect one from HK - 45A version (YGE clone?) and dropped BEC... No problems even with tic/tocs or really hard stops...
BTW I think I love that ESC and I'll get another two! Aside of gov store and other things it was known for, I flew it in ambient temperature of 15-17C and at roughtly 70-80% of throttle doing lots of flips and rolls (and half piro flips and full piro flips) and when it landed I checked the temperature of ESC. It was COLD! Not gently warm as I expected (or on warmer/hotter side some bad ones were) - but COLD as ambient temperature! Definitively less than 36C (and probably around 20C!) as I could feel it being cold! LOL... Sorry - I just digressed! One more detail: aside of MKS DS95s as feathering servos I have S9257 for tail (so still big and power hungry servo)... |

Hi Clicky,
Looks like a nice ESC you bought there. Unfortunately I already have my BEC on order, so I guess I will give it a go. Where did you mount your BEC when you had one? I was thinking about piggybacking it on the ESC. Not the best idea for heat dissipation I guess, but neatly tucked away there (under the battery tray) if there's room. If the BEC isnt up to it I will be ordering the same ESC as you. I have looked up my Scorpion ESC and its internal BEC is rated at 6V/4amp 5 to 15V and is a linear BEC which may explain why it overheated with the DS95 servos respect to the HS65MG ones. Thanks for the info. Nick.

Now you're writing about it - I didn't have BEC on my MT until I got DS95s! It started overheating and cutting off. Fortunately it did it while I was on the ground setting it up and playing with servos. |

I was going to order one to give it a try, but they are out of stock.
If it is in fact an exact YGE clone, then I should be able to use my YGE Program Card II with it. Anyone tried it? I have an authentic YGE 60A on my Protos and I love it. Top of the line ESC.

Not sure if it is exact YGE clone, but I did use YGE original programming card (II I think) with no problems!
Also, people were pointing to that ESC's programming card as cheaper alternative to YGE programming card for original YGE ESCs So, it works in both directions! If I didn't get my 120A and 100A YGEs for stretched and normal Protoses I would have bought one HeliDrive's 80A or 100A to test it, too! |
