Flytrex Live retails for $189.99 and $8.99 for the installation cable. No service fee required.
Also requires a SIM card so it can connect directly with the Flytrex web site in real time. Gee you think the FAA is monitoring this web site also? DUH!!!
Just what we need. A web site that is connected to your multi rotor in real time with some idiot at the sticks. Just shoot me...

Let's imagine that the flyer is a responsible individual and an event occurs that without the flight data could implicate foul play by the flyer.

With the data the flyer could be vindicated.

Also imagine that your quad flies off or goes down. The Flytrex Live will record the last known coordinates giving a very good chance of locating and recovering your quad.

There's good and bad in everything.

Good points.
BUT
1< It costs too damned much.
2< You have to buy a cable to hook it up to your bird. You should be able to pick which bird you're flying and the cable comes as part of the package.
3< You have to buy a SIM card so it can communicate in real time. Which means you have to open an account with some cell phone company and pay a monthly fee to them.
4< You can not access any of the real time data with out going to the Flytrex site and opening an account.

There's a lot more and more cost effective ways to track your bird.

In the UK, which is where I am, GiffGaff offer a SIM which does not require a monthly top up and will not expire whilst credit is still on the SIM.

See below:
  1. United States - T-Mobile pre-paid SIM card. 1GB/month plan costs $10/month. When activating the SIM you'll need to call T-Mobile and ask specifically to have it activated for GPRS usage. T-Mobile activate this service for free.
  2. United Kingdom - Giffgaff Pay-as-You Go sim, £10 minimum initial top-up. Maximum of £0.20 per day charge for up to 20MB data. Unused credit does not expire provided SIM is used once every 6 months. No special activation for use with Flytrex Live required. See www.giffgaff.com for latest terms and conditions.

Flytrex will be bringing out an App so you track your data live and without requiring a computer / laptop.

As for the cost, well one has the choice to buy or not.

One of the biggest positives in favour of the Live to many will be the ability to locate your quad in the event it goes missing or crashes outside of your visual.

This board does look very cool, uploading to fly trex with the sd card afterwards is kind of annoying so I totally see the benefit of this. Obviously finding your missing bird is the biggest + here.

Aside from the $200 device the $10 a month for cellular plan is my major concern. Though I do here lots of family plans are available with shared data so it might not be that bad.

What are some of the alternatives? Here are the ones I'm aware of.

1) GPS trackers such as the Garmin GTU-10 (discontinued) - monthly service fee required
2) Marco Polo - no monthly fee
3) GPS telemetry module
