Default Got myself a 3D Printer

Wow! ......Idea to prototype in a rush!
The CletusWrench below took 45-minutes to print with no finishing necessary, just press in the bearings and install the bolt and nut.
This is an amazing addition to my workshop!

I am very familiar with AutoCAD and now I'm using Solidworks 2010 to do the 3D modeling and to create the files for printing. Printer I'm using is Robo 3D which is a startup company about 14-months old (four bright, young engineers), which I decided to invest in as a kickstarter and very pleased with this open-source machine indeed and best of all, it's paying for itself in the shop
A 3D solids modeling program is what you really need to learn, and there are a few watered-down free applications out there, but it takes some doing to wrap your brain around this 3D stuff and Solidworks really takes some exercising of the grey-matter to be useful, but not an insurmountable task ....hell if you can learn to fly an R/C heli, what's 3D modeling?

Gears are a bit of a challenge. But I cheat, I use a program called Gearotica (real easy) to do the basic gear design, export the file as a .dxf 2D CAD drawing and import that into Solidworks for extrusion and tweaking into a 3D model with all the features I desire.

Build volume is about 8"W x 8"L x 10" H

hahahaha! ......It's part of the 3D printing process, it's used to keep the part adhered to the glass print-bed during printing! ....works Great!

Default I love my workshop!

A little mishap and I broke two of the four wing-struts on my Pitts S12 1/4 Scale airplane. 15-minutes in CAD and 1.75 hrs printing and I have four new struts.

The white is the original, blue is just a trial run as that's what I had loaded in the machine at the time. and then I printed the four red ones simultaneously (never did like the way the white originals looked anyways). Looks like I'll be flying again tomorrow!

I'd really like to see Chris explore this technology some. I think it could somewhat reduce his inventory and lower production cost on some items, allowing him to increase his profitability, readily experiment with various prototype ideas and scenarios and hopefully and ultimately make his return to the the hobby side viable
Also, I've been playing extensively with Arducopter APM2.6 and to some extent Pixhawk autopilots and Mission Planner Software on my smaller UAVs. It is simply amazing the functionality and versatility of this open source, inexpensive autopilot/flight management system. I am preparing to retrofit the big folding Hexa with an APM2.6

Let us know your time spent programming and setting up the APM.

Understanding that you know how to program, read code, solder, etc, I'd like your thoughts on how you think a beginner would fare attempting to use this FC....
