Default Gyro set up help

So I have recently set up a second T-rex 500 that I can't get to hover without tail wag. I have tried just about everything and am about to give up. But during some of my set up II realized I have never set up rate mode on my first 500. It flies well in HH but I would like to set up rate mode as well, since the second 500 is going into a scale body. If I can get it flying stable!! My main question is what gain should I initially set my gyro to in rate mode, it hovers well at about 42% in HH it is a gp750 and I'm using a dx8 radio. The next issue is the tail servo is flush with the boom block with ethe tail blades at zero pitch so I have no more room to move the servo to get the amount of pich I would need for no spin on spool up. So I am not sure what to do

You can shorten your tail pushrod to get more room for adjustment. Try to screw the ball links in some more. Of course, that only works if they aren't already screwed in all the way. Which version of the 500 are you running?

Yea rate mode hover is achieved by adjusting the mechanical length of the tail linkage rod to add enough counter torque tail thrust to hover at neutral. You can also use the slider center adjustment in the FBL software to fine tune. It is a true mechanical neutral position of the tail.(The tail holds a heading because the tail rotor blades are holding it there, not because the gyro is compensating and holding it there).

The rate mode gain on my Futaba radio is opposite of the HH gain. So if I'm in rate mode- max gain is closer to 0. Whereas HH mode-max gain is closer to 100.

I don't know anything about Spektrum sorry.

I had a 500 along with the gp750, I tried everything to get rid of the wag. There were a lot of post about this back in the day.

It seems the 750 was hit and miss, some were ok and didn't wag and some people could never get them to stop wagging, me included. Well I did have two 500 and one with the 750 was ok.

I ended up putting a different gyro on back then, I believe it was a 401.

good luck,

Craig

If you need just a little more room with adjusting the push rod, you can move the ball in on the servo horn. For spectrum, rate is from 1 to 50 (i like 40 for setting up) HH os from 51 to 100 (70+ for set up).

Ill place 40 on one side and 70 on the other. So you can bounce back and forth when setting up.
