Vertical Main Gear Play
How much movement should the main gear for the 800 xxtreme have up and down?

Hi I have checked mine and it feels minimal. Looked around a bit and then finally saw something less subjective than minimal, a touch or a hair;-)
My main gear rests at the bottom on 2 shims and these shims split apart by 0.10mm at the most when i pick up the main gear. The auto rotation gear moves with the main gear when i pick it up and as a matter of fact so does the main shaft and collar at the top. My guess is if I had to loosen the collar and take the head and pick the heli up and then whilst holding push collar down against main bearing block and tighten again i would completely remove this play but in my mind that 0.1mm might be what keeps it running without too much friction. Hopefully you were asking about vertical play and not horizontal |

I've been setting mine as little as I can with the stock 1mm / .5mm shims.
Sometimes it will move and you can see it move , one of my machines I can feel it pop up and hardly see , but it spins real nice. If your too tight the maingear won't spin freely on the oneway. So i'll swap a 1mm for a .5 One of my 800's took several shims on the bottom , 4-5 I recall. So I guess I'd be between .5mm ish of play. 200+ flights on 800 , 150ish on 700 , so it seems to be working for me. Martin

Wow.. lots of play
Hey Guys,
I finally have my Logo 800 flying! She's a beast!! There are some problems I'm seeing with the build however... the tail is vibrating a LOT (as seen through a Skookum 720BE) and I've isolated that to the tail blade holder assemblies. Shafts all seem fine. The blades weigh less than .01 different, so that's not the problem either. I'm seeing a TON of play on the main gear however. I could hear it, so I looked more closely and got a 240FPS video of it. This is not at high speed, just above idle to see the wobble more clearly. At 100%, it sounds 'loud', but the wobble isn't as apparent.
Any ideas? I need to shim it up more I'm guessing. There's about 1.5mm of play up and down. The upper gear that feeds the tail doesn't have any play. It should however, seat into the herringbone pinion and keep locked at that position. I don't see any wear on the gear teeth themselves. She's had about 6 flights on her, no incidents at all (knock on wood) and I'm just trying to get her purring like a kitten for the SK720. |

I would guess you are missing some shims....

I would try to shim the main gear to have very little vert8cle play and then line up the pinion very carefully with the main gear. I then checked backlash one tooth at a time. It takes a little bit of time but after going through that it significantly reduced vibration.
One other thing, the play should be between the tail drive pulley and the lower bearing block. The main shaft itself shouldn't have any verticle play. You would want to adjust the locking collar accordingly to remove any verticle mainshaft play and then shim the main gear to have minimal maingear play. Some play in the maingear is desired to aid in pinion alignment.

First video : main gear wobble.
Looks like a lot of wobble. Things to check : one way hub fit to the maingear : Some of the oneways were slightly oversized (1st run 700XX for eg - but there could be some leftovers out there ) . The oneway hub should easily fit into the gear , slight slight push to pop in. Slight push being the throat of the hub into the maingear hole not the flange pressing into the recess of the gear. If it's a little tight , take some sandpaper to the outer ring of the oneway hub. Fitted properly the hub will drop into place with little to no pressure. It will also spin in the gear easily (without bolts of course). I had one that was oversized and I ended up sanding it to fit rather than sending back for replacement. My fairly recent 800 had a warped gear. I setup a rma with Mikado usa , sent in both the hub and gear and they replaced both. Second vid : your missing shims. On my first 800 build I needed a few extra shims - 3 x.5 I recall. If you didn't forget any shims according to manual , get a few spares , comes in a package of 2 x 1mm and 3 x .5mm I recall. I do my shimming between the underside of the gear and the lowest bearing block. (assuming the manual spec'd shims are in place above the gear. I mix and match the shims (1mm and .5mm are close to there spec , may be slight variances) till I get the least amount of play without binding. to check for binding I back off the motor and spin the gear noting how it spins , if to tight it will stop faster. Another test is to move gear up and down and feel for a little play. My first 800 is really good , when I lift up/down the gear gives a slight popping noise that's hard to see. But it does move slightly and therefore isn't binding. Martin
