I wrote this article with the intention of giving beginners an understanding of what Precision Flying was all about but also what things you can do from a tuning perspective to help you do better.

Reading between the lines, practicing for a contest in anything smaller than a 700 is a lost cause?

I wouldn't say lost cause.

700 sized machines would certainly have an advantage because bigger birds tend to be easier to fly smooth. But there are several very good flying 550 sized birds that could get the job done especially at a local level for learning.

The Red one looks like the older DuBro tray.
