Default Anybody else like low headspeed flying?

I'm gonna start a little positive rant here. We deal with alot of issues and crap on the forums, so let's dump some positive.

Lately I've been hooked on flying my mini at 2600 rpm. I can't stop. It's not even stretched, it's still on 325's and even at 2600 it's AMAZING!

I've never flown a 450 that is so smooth at low head speed. It almost feels like a 500.
I can still do smooth 3d too. Have to watch the collective, but tic tocs, piroflips, everything.

I partly do it because I have a real small area outside my back porch to fly. It's almost too small for a 450, but at low headspeed I can keep it nice and tight no problem. That's how the low speed started, but now I love it.

I will never need to buy another 450. I'll probably pick some others up just to have, but I can never see anything getting more flying time than my Mini P. At such low headspeed, it's so smooth, still agile, and dam it's so quiet. You can barely hear anything.

I hope to know this feeling next week when I change out my tail rotor and pitch slider.

2800 as my lowest flight mode head speed governed on my stretch flies like a dream. That is where I am most of the time. Other 2 flight modes are 3000 and 3200. It will do everything at 3000 and 3200 is just insanely fast response. Especially at my age LOL!

Wow, 2600 on 325's sounds like a challenge!

I fly 2850 on my stretch for training or when I'm after a long night of grown up fun (drinking that is ). Tried to fly 2400 governed by V-Bar built in gov and it's awesome, especially in a gym.

Stretch mini running 3250 gets pretty ballistic That's where I spend most of my air time.

*EDIT.
...
I just used a more accurate tach. It ends up being just above 2700, about 2720. So cell phone tach programs aren't always right on....

Anyways, lol. Numbers were a little off, but it flies amazing.

I even fly mine at 2000rpm. Obviously limited aerobatics but almost silent.

Since I'm still learning, flight time is more important.
My high head speed is 2500 so I get 7:30 flight times form 2600 gens ace pack.

I figure its better to learn collective management from the start.

I hear yah G!
When I fly in small areas I run around 2700 on 325's. Helps keep it close and out of trouble. Totally capable of doing lazy rainbows and careful backwards inverted circuits.
In large areas I'll do 3000HS.

I think one thing that really helps is the external gov. I really have to be totally sloppy with the collective to get the mini p to bog at 2700 HS.

I have a 2400 mode on my stretch and it is great, relaxing fun. It will do anything you can do at 3200, just slower and with more grace.

I'm playing with head speeds on the stock 3s, 16t, setup and was wondering what the ESC efficiency curve was looking like?

I have heard that running at a throttle curve (IU flatline) too low can cause damage.

Bee, do you have the YGE on your bird? It should have no problem running at lower % TC if you have the active freewheeling feature turned on. I even ran @50% a whole batt with not too much heat. I avoid this on hot summer days though as the heat build up from the motor also travels to the esc. I do not gain much flight time with anything under 65% throttle if I don´t adjust my flying style.
Also wind becomes a problem when I go too low. Plus I noticed that the gov (store) does not work that good when I go lower than 60% TC. All this running a 15T pinion.

Hope that helps
Dr

When you calibrate gov store with the blades on you get slightly lower rpm for a given throttle %. I got 2400 rpm at 70% with 15t on 3s.

Heli tach, and that magic mirror thing say mine is at 2930 seems good there, I am sure it would fly lower than that, but I get 4 minutes on the little Gens Aces there...

I discovered today that after changing my normal flight mode from 2600 rpm to 2500 rpm, I heard more blade farting.

I assume that means I need to be a smoother flyer at lower headspeeds?

2000 rpm here. Awesome sound (very quiet, yet similar to a 700 since the blade RPM is similar). Need to be careful with the collective, mostly planning as there is very little room for error or recover.

I fly pretty hard 3d at 3100 rpm and that is good enough for me. Bogging is lower too with my setup at 'moderate' rpm.

Are you guys flying these low headspeeds with throttle curves or with the stock YGE 60 Govstore?

If on Govstore, you'd have to be running like 40% flat curves right? Even with active freewheeling enabled, thats quite low.

I am using the iKON GOV and the YGE. I am sure my throttle percent is extremely low considering I have a 16T pinion. I am not 100% sure of my 100% rpm, but it is close to 3400... So at 2000 I am well below 50% throttle. I have never had my ESC warm up in any situation despite hard flying. The motor gets hot after a hard flight, or a low rpm flight, but it does not overheat.

Well I just tried today some 3S 2200 lipos on my stretch mini P with scorpion 2520-1360kv, and it was pretty nice, I was running a governed 2500rpm mode so it was basically at 100% throttle all the time.
According to Mr Mel's HS calculator the headspeed was between 1800 and 2000 in a hover.

It flew nice and smooth, I love the hang time it has with the 360's, it feels really floaty, the tail held perfectly even at these rpm's.
It was a nice collective management exercise to get it to flip without losing altitude as it really has no power.
It's really nice to practice circuits and figure eights though, and it's so silent it's much less scary.
I think it would be a great setup for beginners who only want to do circuits and stuff like that.
I only flew for 5minutes and the voltage on the lipo is higher than the lipos that were at storage voltage .
I think you can get 8-10 minutes of flight on a 3S 2200, and that's a bit on the light side, I think the CG is a bit on the tail.

I was flying a pulse 2250 4s pack from my quad and could get 8 minute flights with decent power.

I am officially loving my new Mini on 5s with the 6s motor and 16t pinion. It is perfect for flying at the small area at my apartment. I can govern up to 2800 but I like it even better at 2650. I have 2500 set as well and even that low it can do everything I want it to without blowing out the tail. Sooo much better than my stretched 450 pro, I could blow out the tail on that thing at 2700. I am running the Sab 350s and stock tail blades.

I have the 5s 1800 zippy pack and the weight is just right for a stretched mini (250g). Just now I flew for 5 min light 3d at 2650 and 2800 and the pack came down at 3.8v/cell. Probably could go 6 minutes pretty easy.

That TP 5s 1800 would be a nice (expensive) way to chop 50g out too.

I did try a 17t pinon and 2900 and 3000 but saw no benefit (for how I fly) from the higher head speeds. Plus there was bogging and less flight time.

I am also flying a similar setup, except with a 2520-1360 and with a 15t pinion.
I'm also using the 5S 1800 zippy.

I can fly at least 5min (3D) at 2800rpm on RJX vector 360's, and that's already plenty of power, way more than my 3S setup on 325 blades.

I also fly it sometimes on 6S at 3200rpm (haven't gone any higher yet) for when I want it to be a rocket
Shorter flight times though obviously.

I also have not been able to blow the tail out, but I'm using radix tail blades and the lynx pitch lever (well I did manage to blow it out but it was banging the collective in a flip on 3S lipos at 2000rpm, and it just blew out slowly and predictably).
