Perhaps my bonehead move might help others
House guest asked to watch me fly helicopter today. After I set helicopter down I turned around and he had picked up tx near me and began moving sticks around. When I got the tx in my hands and placed it near helicopter and turned it on the throttle was at the halfway point and the throttle location warning came on. Glad I have this warning . LiPo wasn't plugged in yet .
Stupid oversight on my part not to even notice where the stick was. |

I always initialize my helis with TH on, plus always double check that the throttle stick and all switches are where they should be before I plug in the battery. Not just for my safety, for the heli's too.

I installed a locking switch on my DS-16, and programmed it as a parallel throttle hold. The transmitter will alarm and not start unless the locking switch is in the hold position.
Prevents both brain farts and accidental switch actuation.

I'm new to heli addiction but go by the same habits of my plank flying days. The radio is turned on first then initialize the heli and I tote both to where I place the heli for take off. This works for me anyway. People are curious and may not think anything about touching stuff just because.
These thinks can injure very badly, very quick. Be careful! |

Anytime brother. Look at the name, this dunderhead got a painful lesson in the importance of throttle hold in my heli beginnings. Tx on a neckstrap, leaned forward to pick up my 450 and hit the throttle all the way up with my body as I leaned. Shot up and exploded the blades across my shoulder and arm.
TH is my best friend now and always in the back of my mind. In the air, at the field and on the bench. TH TH TH....lol |

As a bonus, I use having to click TH off before I can take off as a reminder to also hit the timer switch before I take off. Doesn't always work but it helps.

When I move my heli from the bench to the helipad and the other way around, I keep locking the TH switch with my index finger. I lost count of the times I accidentally bumped the collective/throttle stick (as I'm grasping the heli by the rotor hub, I can feel the grips pitching up).

I have all my helis setup differently than most but like the safety director at our club says, get a routine and do what works for you. This is what works for me. First, my radio alarms if TH or IU is engaged when powering up so I set TH off (disengaged) and TC to normal and left stick down. This is the perfect reminder my switches are in the right position before plugging my flight pack. This works because of how I set my normal TC. Rather than zero at low stick, I figure out the lowest throttle position that will still keep the motor running. This is usually around or 7 or 8 percent and my normal mode throttle curve is like 7-50-80-80-80 that I use only for take off and setting up to land. I hit TH a few feet off the ground and mini auto in. (I don't know if it matters but I run everything un-governed with flat TC's in IU1 and IU2.) After powering up my heli with TH off, the ESC won't arm because it doesn't see zero from the throttle even with the stick all the way down. When I'm ready to fly, I have to engage TH which does send zero throttle to the ESC to initialize it, then I set my timer, move the left stick to the middle and flick TH off to spool up. With a powered up heli, I'd have to click the TH switch twice - engaged to arm the ESC then disengaged (off) before it will spool up. After landing, I set my radio on the ground so it doesn't get bumped and unplug the battery before carrying my heli off the field. I also never let my TX dangle by the neck strap. Both my Hurricanes, both my 450's, my X2 and X5 are all setup this way. However you do it, having a set routine and mental checklist is the best way to be safe. --Elisabeth

And don't let people distract you while you are doing your mental checklist.

My throttle curves are flat but the low stick would be negative pitch in combination with thorrtle hold
I seen a heli fly up almost right into some bodies face |

I wish my DX7 didn't scream at me everytime I boot it up with the throttle hold on.

Here's my procedure:
If the Tx (DX8) has left my field of vision at any time: Check if the selected model is the right one. Move every switch to where it's supposed to be (especially flight modes, dual rates, the knob, etc.) Put Tx next to the heli, close enough so I can reach it if necessary but out of the main and tail rotor's action radius. Also far enough from the edge of the table and unhooked from the strap. While holding the battery cables and ESC cables up, I make sure the display reads "hold" and then connect the battery. Quick controls check (moving the sticks around) before I set the Tx down again and put the canopy on. Then I hook the strap in and get flying.

I get why it would beep if my throttle is on but my throttle hold isnt hurting anybody. I need to turn it off everytime I turn the tx off and turn it on every time I turn the tx on. Gets kind of old.

The ops problem shouldn't hurt anything in reality I haven't seen a system that would initialize if the stick wasn't down anyway. So it could stay at high stick all day long and at most throw the esc into programming mode.
