AR7200BX and 3 Blade Head.... need assistance.
Alright guys need some opinions here.... as some of you may know I scored a very cheap "slightly crashed" 450 3D about a month and a half ago to accompany my mSR X and 300X. Well after rebuilding (and learning about flybars) I have decided that I'm not a fan of the whole mechanical flybar setup since I've never dealt with them before.
Today I am picking up a very cheap AR7200BX from a buddy and will be converting the 450 to FBL. I was thinking about going with a 3 blade head and building a scale AS350 out of this one.... does anyone have any experience and suggestions on which route to go with the head? I've seen a few pre-built and ready for installation, will it work on the stock main shaft or do I need to upgrade that too? Also, any phasing knowledge would be greatly appreciated too. Lastly, can anyone point me in the right direction of what kind of settings I should use on the beastx with the 3 blade head and stock 450 3D? Would they be the same as with the 2 blade FBL ugrade kit Eflite makes? Just curious of how to approach this once I get the beastX today.... thanks! |

Do a two blade conversion first to get used to the FBL controller.
The three bladed 450 heads are usually for T - Rex's - meaning the main shaft will likely need modding... ... bigger issue is with the swash with 3 blades (3 pitch linkages). Unless you can find a 3 pitch linkage swash which effectively has the AR pin relocatable (T-Rex's have the elevator servo behind), you may be in line for a LOT of work.

That's what I was worried about, I emailed the manufacturer of this one - http://www.smartmodel.com.hk/product...6&image=image1 - and they said it was compatible with this B450... but they didn't say how compatible meaning what extra measures must be taken to make it work.
Well, the good thing about this FBL controller (Spektrum AR7200BX) is that it's the same one as on my 300X so I already know how to use it/set it up, I just need to find some parameter value suggestions to get me started.... though I can always do a similar set-up to the 300 as long as I set my servo frequency and tail gain based on the 450. Would you suggest getting the Blade 450 Aluminum FBL upgrade head - http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...t-b450-BLH4399 - just to get her going FBL and then wager my options later on the multi-blade set up, or do you prefer a different FBL head? Thanks! |

That head you linked had the ar pin arsewise. Unless the swash can be modded to reverse that, and from the single pic, I'd wager no, you've some work figuring out how to get the inner race to go onto a swash with an outer race that is blade 450 compatible.
Cost out a t rex 450, might save you a lot of aggro for your scalie in the long run. Time is money right? I hear Tarot clones are pretty good, under $200. I've only ever used their fbl head on a b450 ( lots of threads here). Btw, I have one Align, very impressed by build quality. The blade fbl upgrade kit is good for a blade upgrade, to answer your last. It just works.

Great thanks for the answers, that helps substantially! The only reason I went with this particular 450 is because I got such a good deal on it - being crashed and all with minimal parts to replace for less than $150.... I'll take it haha! I know what it's really worth and to only replace a flybar seesaw holder, tail boom, and tail servo I definitely walked away with the upper hand on this deal - it pays off to have people that buy something off a shelf and know nothing about it!
Since I'm more or less just annoyed with the flybar, I guess for now I will get her going FBL with the Eflite upgrade head kit... since we know Blade parts are compatible with Blade helis! I will just have to keep asking around and see if someone has used a 3 blade (or multi-blade head in general) on one of these and who manufactures them - so far no luck, which is why I started a thread. I guess I could look into doing a scale JetRanger or something different since an AS350 might look goofy with only 2 main blades!! |

Agreed to money saver and when you do go ahead a put in all metal servos....i bought mg90s ...4 per pac @ $ 17.70 per pac from bluebetter on ebay. You might find something cheaper but they dropped right in and work great.Already crash tested them with one of my 300`s and boy did it cut down the repair time not having to rebuild the stockers..i put it off for 4 yrs..but now ,i`m not looking back.I did keep the stock tail servo..it`s extremly fast and ive had no probs with them.

airwolf / Bell 222?
If I were to do a scale it'd be a UH-1, Airwolf, or for the lols, our local HEMS Dauphins. Naturally the UH-1 has issues with a raised tail, the Dauphin with a fen tail.

I emailed them about a week ago to see if they we're planning on engineering multi-blade heads for 300X and 450 3D/X..... unfortunately they are on holiday break (Chinese New Year?) until February 7 - hopefully they'll come back with good news!!

The price is really reasonable. If it will bolt directly onto a 450x main shaft, I'll definitely buy one!
