Default Nice day out with the Tareq

Here in Michigan, it was gorgeous out today. 75, breezy, sunny. Low humidity. Dang! Took the day off to fly. Good call.

The 700N, with the YS91SRX (Murnan Modified) was singing a very good tune indeed. Power was spot on, ran cool, and was majorly making killer power. Rotor speed right around 2100, pitch 13, and never bogging. I had to really load the head severely and hamfist the pitch to get a light bog. It ate full pitch with a very sweet loaded sound. Evidence all was well? Cool engine, and the tank only lasted about 5 mins each time. Probably the best nitro outing I've ever had!

Nice one Rob. Curious to see how many turns out you are on the needles. I'm 2.5 on the high and 2 on the mid with my flying style. Otherwise it's too hot.

So you are running 1.25 turns out past the factory settings (on high) and .25 past mid factory setting? That's a LOT of fuel...

Not really bud. 6.30m and it's out. Motor just rich enough. Different part of the world I guess. Tareq himself doesn't even know how many turns out he is. Sets it very rich and goes from there.

Beware... I was 2 turns on mid and 1 3/4 on high during break in and then went to factory settings, it leaned out and killed the engine on first flight. Lesson learned

I felt like mine was making close to full power with break in settings also. Backplate was probably about 120 degrees. 30% rotor rage fuel.

Flew again Thursday morning. Was some kind of monster! I think I have the Hover out about 1 3/4 and the High a little less, maybe 1 5/8 or so. My backplate has never been more than cool to the touch. Not much above ambient. I've run CP30 and now some Magnum 30.

My high needle is out about 3 clicks rich of 1.5 turns. The manual states that 1.25 is the break in setting. In the past I have had 2 ys 91SR, 3 ys91ST, 2 os91 and a bunch of 50's. This backplate is wayy hot for the manual stated break in needles. Actually, I think those settings are the same ones for all my previous YS engines.

When I run my SRX close to the manual settings, especially the mid, the engine screams angry and hangs on the pipe.

I'm at high altitude in Denver.

My personal opinion os that 120F for a YS heli engine is a pretty hot backplate. My YS engines have always had pretty cold backplates, even if I ran it too lean. Maybe for an OS, or other engine, it's not hot. But for this engine, I believe it's too hot. End of the day, even though we can disagree about what is hot, we can't go by the backplate as a dependable indication of proper mixture.

No, you can't but it is one of many things I've used to tune an engine. My ears have been most important and I did hear cackling with break in settings. Now I do not with my current needle setting. Just putting my experience out there to help keep people from cooking their $400 engine.
