Default Upgrade motor for Protos?

http://www.anythingheli.com/hyperion...shaft-gaui-x5/

4025 890kv 5mm shaft. Isn't any lower in the KV range so it won't change the pinion size, except for the extra power might give you an extra tooth or two especially if it's headspeed you are looking for.

Heli direct has an adapter on clearance for $0.00 it's originally for an outrage 550, and designed to space a Scorpion 40mm series.

Even better here is the 5mm shaft to fit 4025 motors.

Should work for the Protos.
I could easily be wrong but 890 is the lowest kv I remember seeing in the 4025.

Since I am new to the Protos, I don't know the shaft details. Is it extra length needed for the steady bearing that the replacement shaft is for?

Also seems if one plans to pull the amps with more head speed, a higher capacity ESC will be needed, like the YGE 90LV, for example.

There were some older posts here on that motor being a nice upgrade. Smoother running was reported.

Cutting the frame is needed to fit the 3226 motor, I would doubt a 4025 motor could fit.

No the shaft fits a 5mm bore pinion not the standard 6mm of a 4025. It's shaft is long enough to drop it down a couple mm to keep it clear of the upper part of the frame. I imagine the difficulty might come if the motor is long enough to touch the bottom frame. If that is the case you would have to trim out the stock side bars of the bottom plate and replace them with a curved bracket or spaced plate.
One thing to note that not everyone realizes is generic motors and some others are usually listed by can size.
Where as Scorpion and other higher end motors are usually listed by stator size. Meaning a generic 4260 night be similarly sized to say a Scorpion 3240.
A 2221 scorpion is listed as a 2836 or something like that.
So yeah a 4025 scorpion is quite wide.
