Default Noobs flying 700s

Well I think we all saw the post by (.........) and his opinion on Noobs flying 700s.

I'd like to chime in as I am that Noob.

I'm flying a Trex 600 pro and a Goblin 700. I have been in the hobby for less than 4 months.

Having said the above, I have learned a tremendous amount of information from the guys at the field, my local hobby shop and here on helifreak.

(............) post pretty much slammed what he thought of as "the new guy" flying larger Helis as he feels their dangerous.

Is a large heli dangerous, sure. It's common sense. So is anything else in life. I used to ride morercycles. That was dangerous, I used to sky dive, that was dangerous, and above all, the below analogy should say it all best.

I'm a licensed pilot and guess what (.........), I can fly a real aircraft but I can't fix it. I guess that means I shouldn't fly a plane because its dangerous.

So what I'm getting at here is this. Bigger Helis are in fact way more stable. If a noob like me spends hours of practice on a sim, buys a 700, and flies it, what's the prob?

He doesn't need to know what gyro works best or how to set it up while the heli is in the air. Some people prefer to have their LHS do everything. That's their prerogative.

Best of all, I'm flying the sh*t out if my Goblin 700 after 3 months.

I may get an 800 now, just to spite you.

I always tell people to buy the biggest heli they can afford. If its a 700 then so be it. You can have a 700 as your first heli and learn while being responsible with it. I don't see the problem here.

Go on!

Did buy my first Henseleit 700 Nitro build and tested from a flying school.
I learned a lot in flying from that machine not in tinkering.

Just like almost everything else, responsibility is the key. Being a newbie is not a problem at all, provided you know your limits. Looks like you do, so don't worry, enjoy the hobby and fly safe.

Cheers!

One of the great things about this hobby - there are may options for learning.
  • Buy a Blade Nano and crash the piss out of it
  • Buy a 450 and be very careful, but deal with a few crashes
  • Buy a 700 and don't do anything until you absolutely master it on the sim
And everything in between.
There is no wrong way. Typically those that can afford a 700, and are interested in a 700, are not the type to just throw money away by crashing it a few flights in.

Ya know, the way I see it is some of the pros put their lives at risk more often than a new heli guy with a 700. Hurricanes coming within feet of the pilot is never safe no matter what your skill level is.

I love this hobby because people are so nice and don't judge others for their heli choice, everyone is just excited to be taking part in the same activity. It's a shame to see all the high school drama here lately.

Default Noobs flying 700s

One guy I fly with just started this summer with an mcpx and 450X. He now has a 630 Goblin and is putting a 600 scale build together. Before next summer I am sure he will be outflying me, not that it takes much.

There is another pilot I know of who just started last summer and is already an SAB team pilot with his Goblin 700. From what I have heard, it is his dad that does the wrenching.

The heli I learned on was a Walkera 4G6 and then went to a 450. If I could do it again and could have afforded it I would have jumped straight from that sub-micro to a 600 size.

There is nothing wrong with starting out with a big heli aside from it can get expensive fast if you don't use common sense.

Your right and I don't wish to add to it, however. People shouldn't bash or label guys as noobs. Everyone was a "noob" at one point in this hobby. It's a very fun and addicting hobby. Everyone at my local field has been very supportive so far.

This forum is designed as a vehicle to share information. From experienced to non experienced. When we start bashing people for a lack of experience, we take away from the intent of this forum in the first place. As I am a so called noob who has progressed nicely thanks to this forum, I feel it's important to stand up when someone bashes noobs.

Personally I think part of the fun is moving up from size to size. I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey from a mcpx to 450x to Logo 500 to ???!

What fun would life be if you had a Ferrari for your first car. Where do you go from there?

I don't know about you guys but I'd gladly accept a Ferrari as a first car

+ 1 and good for you. For whatever reason, I think most people seem to associate the word noob with a 16 year old kid. Just becouse your a noob does not mean that one lacks common sense. Get at that 700 and have fun.

Back in the day your first helicopter was a .30 nitro. There were no small fixed pitch electrics, electrics of any kind, or helicopters smaller than a .30 nitro. And there were no simulators, you learned to fly on your nitro.

That .30 nitro was a "beginners machine" back then.
