Default Orlando FL - idiotic new ordinance requires permit for all RC flight

The City of Orlando has adopted a new ordinance. In a nutshell, in order to fly at any school or park in Orlando, you must obtain either a daily permit ($20) or an annual permit ($150).

Yup, that's right. Little Johnny can no longer fly his 5 ounce Sport Cub S at the local schoolyard without the City's stamp of approval.

Here is the ordinance itself. Bans anything that cannot be controlled from inside or on the aircraft itself. So even paper airplanes are banned. So are frisbees.

Yup, but the language of the ordinance itself does not restrict it to "drones". Model aircraft are specifically included.

Quote:
Unmanned Aircraft: The term “unmanned aircraft” means an aircraft, including model aircraft, operated without the possibility of direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft.
Reading the ordinance, it seems to cover control line, free flight, or even frisbees. Anything designed to fly through the air without direct human control.

Up to $500, plus seizure of the equipment used (not just the model, but the radio and anything else used to fly).

I wonder if all the schools in the area will receive a bill for every baseball, football, basketball, tennisball and frisbee they have in facility...

TORCHS would probably only need to pay the yearly permit fee, but I'm sure they've already made arrangements with the city. If anything, ordinance like this could force RC pilots to join more clubs. If they can't fly in public parks without risking property seizure, then they'll seek out dedicated clubs where they can fly. At least for the serious pilots. This will kill the hobby for those just dipping their toe in.

We are not, happily, within the City of Orlando.

While I agree that this ordinance is a bit of an overreach, I think its a good thing to get more people flying at clubs.

Frankly I had given up flying at parks, even with small 450 and under helis, a long time ago. Way to many distractions and things to go wrong. Dog attacks the heli, kids run out into your flight area, noise complaints, etc....

I agree. People just toying around wanting to try the hobby will be turned down and drop out because of this.

I personally fly at a dedicated AMA field. Besides the occasional after work 450 flight in my front yard.

The city risks a liability issue and airborne models are considered an attractive nuisance. A model helicopter either electric or nitro is a disaster waiting to happen.
