Default Emergency Response Kit Ideas

Fellow HeliFreaks -
It's been quite some time since I have been on the forum or flown. With work and the kids, I have been grounded most of the 4th quarter.

I'm going through my gear and going I build an emergency response kit for the field. I'm looking for additional ideas. I have added a small container of Lith-X and firefighter gloves. I'm ordering a small medical jump kit. Adding Paracord since that stuff has multiple uses.Click image for larger version

In the mean time I am practicing on Phoenix to shore up my skills for the Spring.

I presume Lith-X is for extinguishing Li fires?

No point carrying that then, since there is NO metallic Li in a LiPo battery. THe combustion that occurs there is straight up hydrocarbons and oxygen (hydrocarbons from the electrolyte and casing oxygen from the cathode when it gets too hot).

A normal (foam or powder) fire extinguisher will work for all the stuff the battery sets on fire, it will put the battery out to, but chances are it will re-light. The reactions in a failed LiPo produce a lot of heat and do not require oxygen so there is little you can do but wait and stop other things from being set alight.

I carry a 3litre (sorry but we use metric) plastic bottle of water, plus med kit. The med kit lives in my car, and the water gets put in with the heli's. Had to use it last time out do to small fire, (a member crashed) so already paid off. Funny thing was, the lipo didn't catch fire for a good few 2-4?) minutes after the crash.

Never apologize for using metric, it is the only way.

So you don't drink pints of beer?

Yes water is fine for putting out LiPo fires and useful if you fly at a dry field with no supply. Also useful for rehydrating the dog

First Aid kits best really to just have clean dressings to cover cuts rather than try definitive treatment. I keep an elastic bandage in mine to use as a lymphatic tourniquet in case of snake bite. Judging by the age of some of the members of our club, I have often wondered whether I should take along an automated defib as well !
