Out with old in with new (motor)
When I purchased my used 500 a while back it came with a well taken care of 3026-1600kv motor. I'm running a 16 tooth pinion and 2800ish Headspeeds
I put a set of bearings in that motor from boca and haven't really had many issues ever. Just picked up a slightly used 3226-1600kv motor and I'm curious about pros and cons of this motor. It's still in shipping from a member here but I'm looking forward to getting it installed. With the addition of my 630 machine this 500 has really become my go to flyer and I am comfortable beating on it -Markus. |

Hi Markus, will be interesting to compare both motors (3026 vs 3226) and their power consumption, however I don't expect to see a big difference. The 1400kv is more powerful but is really power hungry, expect a 30-40% flight time reduction. In that regard I preferred the economy of the 3026-1600kv Scorpion and I have been happy with its performance. I have changed the stock bearings only once adding a pair of ceramic bearings.

The gearing in mine is the same as a Trex. 162T main gear, 16T pinion on mine. Tail belt, ESP setup basically. In hindsight, If I could go back, I would go with the 3226-1600kv motor simply due to gearing. I run my 1400kv Castle governed at 2750rpm, but my Castle warning is at 2685rpm. The 1400kv motor is a monster, but its more meant for a stretched 500, 470mm blade machine. I can see my PWM flat-lining when I really smack it around, which means it needs more gear. I don't want to go to a 17T pinion yet, but I might have to. The 1600kv motor is much better suited for 430mm 500's. You can run a 16T pinion for around 2950rpm or drop a pinion for a better gear ratio. Overall, much better motor compared to the older versions - MUCH bigger too.

Update. I like the 3226-1600 VERY MUCH.
I didnt change anything and have yet to pull data logs but the heli felt as if it had much more torque for my flying style.. Packs came down just about the same voltage after a 4:30 flight but without taking logs I'm unsure about that. Any my occasional whistle went away! Even after replacement the motor bearings in my other 3026 motor, i would get an occasional chirping sound. Well that's now gone I like. |
