D.W.F. (Drinking While Flying)
I've learned a lot being in this hobby and I can say without a doubt that the most important thing that I have learned so far is that most of my crashes (ergo, money spent) were due to my consumption of alcohol. Give me a couple of beers and this is when I want to fly the most! Usually with 450 size birds or smaller in my own back yard. I had to promise the Mrs. that I wouldn't anymore.
When I was into plank flying, I'd get AMA and a local club membership. Some time about 15 or 20 years ago the wording forbidding alcohol use crept into the AMA rules. I take it seriously because my biplane weighs 14 lbs and goes 60 -70 mph. Many things may cause an R/C aircraft to come down. I did not want my AMA insurance to be voided because of alcohol use, even though some kid a mile away shot the plane down with an aircraft radio that he put in his car! Now picture Bubba and a Nitro 700 sized bird at the school yard falling down drunk! He is out there!! A bad incident could possibly bring down more restrictions on the hobby we love! |

Foot in mouth. Why does anyone feel the need to tell anyone else what they can and can't say. He wasn't "condoning illegal activities", if you don't like it block him and keep on clickin'. I just blocked you for instance.

Either way, as long as you're not a danger to yourself or anyone else, I don't really see anything wrong with a little intoxication, no matter what the source, before flying. Some substances more than others will tend to cause sloppy flying and crashes, but then again, some don't.
Personally, I don't fly when intoxicated. If drinking/flying was a little less dangerous, it would be fun to get a few beers, some friends, and go out flying. Unfortunately, beer is one of those things that, for me at least, don't mix well with my coordination. If you're not endangering yourself, or more importantly, anyone else, then have at it. Well this thread is great! I decided that when I get everything I need to get done tomorrow im gonna bring a tall can or two with me to the field and test this theory out. I always get the shakes at some point when flying the 450

Right? It just cracks me up. Some people just have to "remind" others on these sort of topics to keep it to themselves...as if they are "holier than thou" or something, especially if it might be illegal. I wouldn't have mentioned any thing illegal because someone always has to whine about it. There are bigger problems out there than this ya know. Whatever makes some people feel better about themselves I guess. OK, waiting for my foot.

I had the same issue from the sim and going to the field but in time it will pass as I sure it is now. But for me another trick was flying alone. The idea of someone watching me gave me the jitters for some reason.

Drinking and Flying...
Was just flying inverted and doing hurricanes in my flight simulator after a couple drinks.
I don't think the alcohol helped my flying any, but it does give me a reason to think that some of this is sticking. If I can do this after having a few drinks, I have to be commiting some of this to muscle memory, because I'm certainly not putting any deep thought around anything I'm doing

I bet it lowers your inhibitions. Is it easier to go inverted?

Yes, it would. Small amounts of alcohol actually will act as a stimulant in your brain, reducing surface tension and actually boosting concentration. (small, like one shot, or maybe even less).
Heard a speech professor once recommend taking 1/2 to 1 shot before giving a speech because of this. There's no reason why it couldn't apply to helis, but I wouldn't recommend it...

Nothing wrong to do it while on the sim. If not sober you may not even realize how crappy you fly and how dangerous it would be in a real flight.
However drinking and flying real would not be a good idea. |
