I just got a set of training gear from hobby king for my trex 450. Is it supposed to support the heli? I just assembled it and the heli flattens it. I understand that may be how its supposed to be, but how is this supposed to help?

Helps keep it from tipping over. None of them have 100% rigidity

I can see that for taking off. But landing, I can't see it helping too much. Seems like a good way to snag something. I might just take them off again

and don't use it too long. 10-20 flights maybe.. really you want it only until you can gently land and not slam it down too hard. it will fly so much better without.

it really should be used on a hard surface.you can then skim sideways as you get used to the controls yes on it catching clumps of grass/weeds.

+1 on hard surface. Either that or very very close cropped grass like a golf course. On grass, use bigger balls if possible. You do not want, under any condition for the heli to be suspended like trampoline in the training gear. The heli's main gear must sit firmly on the ground without any tendency to "float"
Once you have mastered takeoff and landing and can hover out the tank/pack tail in, then take it off. This can be 2 flights or it can be 50 flights, depending on the heli's stability and the pilots learning ability.

I "custom made" my first set of training gear using a small (about 3" square) block of 3/4" wood, 4 1/4 dowels and used empty water bottles for the "balls". it really worked great - the water bottles were attached by drillng a slightly larger than 1/4 hole in the lid, and a small screw through the bottom of the bottle into the end of the dowel which allowed the bottles to freely spin. This allowed for yaw while on the ground. the bottles are obviously larger than the typical commercial landing gear balls which made them ideal for grass etc.
I would post a pic, but am travelling and dont have a pic on my laptop!

Training gear help significantly with takeoff's and landings. Ideally, you want to be on a hard surface so the balls roll..this way you can get a feel for the heli when it's full weight is not on the ground. So, the gear will help to keep you from accidentally tipping it over.

Once you can take off and land comfortably, pitch the training gear.

One thing further you can do is to get a set of 500 skids and mod them to fit your 450. This will give you added stability and even some confidence over the 450 gear while not being too detrimental to the heli's flight characteristics.

Pitch them now! Hundreds of guys the world over that have used these can blame multiple crashes on them. They snag the ground (especially if you are training on grass) and flip the heli over. Take a set of 550/600 skids and mod these to fit your heli. Best training gear you will ever use and they aren't dangerously gangly like the training gear is. This may look ugly and this is controversial because of this. But it works.

I'm a totally new pilot and have had really good luck using the training gear. I really feel like it helped me progress much faster than if I hadn't had it; and it still saves me if I come in hard on a landing. it also really helps me with judging the distance/orientation. I put the little golf/wiffle balls on there, right at the ends of the sticks, and it does well on pavement and grass. to the OP, the springyness of the gear helps cusion hard landings.
but what do I know... |

Yeah I pitched them. Been hovering around and landing fine in the back yard all evening I don't think I'll be needing them

I landed a little off-center on my first flight, snapping the training gear and sending it into the main rotor. Like ping pong balls in a Cuisinart.
I parked the 450 for a while and got an mCP X. Once I got comfortable landing the mCP X, the 450 was easy. No training gear needed.
