Anyone resolve the pitting issue with alum. Tail slider?
So I've purchased and replaced another aluminum tail slider, and after about 20 flights it's begun to pit and look damaged. I'm not at all sure what is causing it, but it's annoying. Any help would be awesome! Thanks guys.
Edit : Oh and it only does it on one side, and the bearing does spin freely. |

Did you replace the pitch lever also?
I've been curious about this since your first post. I am curious if the pins have a burr or sharp edge to them where they meet the slider. They are steel, so they will definately damage the aluminum. But the real question is why? There certainly is a lot of force where they meet, but the slider should not be spinning unless the bearing is failing during flight. I would first completely clean all the aluminum debris from the area, that powder will amplify the wear very quickly (especially at high speed - seen it in engines). Check the pivot pins, if good they should have a nice polished surface, no roughness should be felt with your finger nail. Check the bearing, make sure its smooth rolling, lube it generously with the heli on its side and let the lube soak in. Check the bearing right after a flight too, for heat and roughness. Since its steel on aluminum I would either lube the groove with a heavy synthetic grease, or you could try some dry graphite lube to help prevent more wear. I just switched to the aluminum pivot, but am still using the plastic slider. I haven't seen any wear on it yet. I think the biggest problem is when the aluminum does wear for whatever reason, the powder / material that gets ground off acts like sand paper as it is rubbed between the steel pin and aluminum slider. Just my 2 cents, I was a motorcycle / powersports mechanic for over 10 years before I became a service manager. Hope you find the problem thats causing it.
