You are going to mount the GPS on you TDR boom?

Seriously?

You polished the servo arms, chemically treated the ESC heatsink to get the colour you wanted, dyed the gears black, got a carry bag from the other end of the world, trimmed esc and power cables to exact length, shortened the tail servo with a neatly crimped connector, and who knows what else I'm leaving out....

I'll only believe it after I see the pictures

Believe it!

I'm spending a LOT of my time inverted these days and the GPS will have a much clearer view of the sky without having the entire helicopter body in the way.

It may not be pretty, but I expect to get a lot more flight time on my TDR as a result of this little device, so I'll put up with it for now. I don't consider this permenant, but for this season it might be.

Yes, I suppose that actually will work much better than under the canopy when you're inverted...

Have fun! I can't wait to try mine... It's been sitting and waiting for almost two months now...

So you purchased your TDR to use as a ??? Door stop?

I'm not sure if it will work better out there than under the canopy, but this is easy for now and I can always change it with just one zip tie

Vinger, I think I'll stick with my Pyro for now

However, I have a 600MX on my E5 and it is holding up for the time being. I put a longer shaft on it and replaced the bearings though.

I might as well have... It's been ages since I last flew it.

The last time I had time to fly, I could only manage to rush out for an hour with the 450...

I'm sorry for your poor trophy TDR!

I'm really trying to get a lot more flying in this year. I have lots of priorities in my life, but I'm making an effort to get more flying in this year.

The fibreglass canopy will not block GPS signals, so you can mount it underneath the canopy. Blades to obstruct it a bit we can live with that.

The issue with the TDR is that under the canopy also means that the GPS will be mounted above the frame, which would see the GPS signal obstructed by said frame when inverted...

Since the GPS satellites are going to most likely be off to the side and not straight over head this may all be moot.

Typically it is reading between 11 and 13 satellites at my air field, and since they are in geosynchronous orbit the relative angle of my heli's to them is nearly constant. It alternates between knowing it's exact position between 1.5m and 4m.

I stuck it out there because

1. It is FAR away from any electronic interference.
2. The wiring is not parallel to any other wiring.
3. It took me 5 minutes to get everything set up.
4. I purchased 100 of these little zip tie mounts, so why not use them.
5. My knee jerk reaction is that it would have a clear shot to see the satellites.

I may put it somewhere else eventually, or on another helicopter at some point.

There may be more of a difference in signal between flying on an overcast cloudy day and a clear day.

Good point...

Surely you mean geostationary....

All geostationary satellites are geosynchronous, but not all geosynchronous satellites are geostationary...

Definitely. This would be something of which to be aware. Satellite locks on overcast days are a bit iffy. Then again, if it's that overcast, you may want to stay indoors and prevent getting caught out in a probable downpour with your helis...

If I couldn't fly on overcast days I'd be very limited.

If I start to hear thunder than I pack things up.

I think this is a better picture of this mount.

The simplicity is great!

The double sided tape on the plastic mount is a perfect fit for the back of SK-GPS.
The 3M double sided foam tape holds the position on the boom firmly and peels off easily, and zip ties are cheap and disposible.

Looks like a pretty solid mount to me. I mounted my "horizontally" oriented satellite receiver in the exact same spot...

I find that tiny bit suspicious.
It seems the number on the right could be voltage and the 10000 number on the big panel up there might be RPM. If so, then it was tested on voltage less then half of the "Scorpion" test, so the power was also less then half... No wonder then...

Since this is an off topic thread, just looking at the chat on satellites, GPS sats are lower earth orbit (20,000 km I believe) so change position, hence the need for a large constellation so that there are always enough for a good fix visible anywhere on the planet.
Geosynchronous and geostationary satellites are at about 36,000 km and their orbit time is 24 hrs so appear static. the stationary sats orbit over the equator so appear stationary and do not require tracking, used for TV broadcast etc. The synchronous sats are not over the equator so appear to wobble in a fig 8 pattern, these require tracking normally.
So GPS sats do not fit either category for info.
