Converting a 400 to a 6S 450x?
I have an old 400 (stock, minus some Hi-tec servos) that I'd like to do something with. I have a spare FBL unit... and that's the extent of my conversion parts list thus far
What do I need to convert this to a 450X (or even a 360CFX minus carbon frame?) on 6s? I know I'll need a head and maybe some new servos/blades, but what else? Any motor/ESC combo recommendations? I don't need nuts powerful, but I really miss my 450x and the way it flew. I'm on to larger and smoother birds now and sometimes get the itch for something lighter. Or would it be better to just pick up a used 450x v2 or 360CFX? But then I'm back to having a spare 400 I never fly.

Keep it as a spare.... By the time you sink the money into making it what you want, you could have a virtually new machine AND have a backup...

I guess you just have to decide what the end goal is. Do you want a really well performing 360 class heli, or are you just interested it making use of the B400 airframe?
In all honesty I probably wouldn't recommend converting a B400 to 6S unless you're planning on changing out for a CF frame and all of the expense that entails. Especially if you plan to stretch it. It may be physically possible, but that plastic frame was never really built to handle the kinds of loads put on it by a bigger power system and larger blades. I guess if you take it real easy it would be possible, but it's going to be marginal at best. I'd say you're better of with something like a basic Gaui X3 airframe and reuse what electronics you can since you're planning on a new motor and ESC already. I think if I was going to stick with the B400 airframe I'd set it up for 3S on 325mm blades, but that's just me.

So 6S is out of the question, that leaves converting to a 450x non-stretch on 3S. It looks like the frames are the same, but I can't find any concrete evidence. But even removing the cost of a new frame from buying a new motor, esc, helical gears, I'm only $100 or so away from a used 450x in good condition.
How many parts are shared between the 400 and 450x? is the tail assembly the same? I suppose I could use my 400 for parts if they share enough.

Clean 450x's minus the FBL are going for $100-150ish these days. You can get brand new 450x airframes for $130. Sell the 400 and start over. Think about what you really want versus conversion unless for some reason you are driven to continue flying the 400.

As far as I remember the B400 is real close in design and they share a lot of parts including that whole Rube Goldberg elevator linkage. I think a few of the skid and support mountings are a little different, something like that, but otherwise they're real close. Like you said, you already have a FBL system so you don't want to buy something BNF. If the goal is to have a stock plastic framed B400 or 450X then I'd just work with what you've got. Sounds like all you really need is the flybarless head.

With 360CFX helis like this can be had, a 450x or building a 450 class "blade heli" doesn't make econmic sense.
https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=720877 I have a Lynx frame, servos, motor, ESC, etc. to re-build my 450x into something more reliable, but got a similar deal on a 360CFX befor eI even got started. |
