When I mounted the mechanics in mine, the frame sits on the floor on top of foam tape without the backing peeled off. A 4-40 screw through the front and rear with tee nuts inside the frame bottom. I made a couple of braces from the upper frame to doghouse. This made it very stable and have never had a vibration.

I have that head as well. I was testing it on another pod & boom. The 6th flight just as it was getting light on the skids, I heard a loud pop. The heli jumped up and forward into the ground. The head of the screw that clamps on the main shaft broke off. Until that is flew smooth. Loops and rolls no problem.

I do love that head, it's super smooth and crazy stable... up until this build I had never messed with multi-blade heads but I'm glad I tackled the "beast" haha. I'm going to do a tiny bit more testing until I get my tail exactly how I want it before permanently going into the fuse. I feel like I'm not getting a good consistent medium with gyro gain... The other day at the field (it was slightly windy) but the tail was either too soft or I would get a good bit of wag. On some days she's rock solid and others not so much, I may try tightening up the belt ever so slightly to see if she holds/responds better. Any advice here would be much appreciated. Another question, whats the best way to go about drilling into the fiberglass for new mounting holes? I would hate to crack or damage the the craftsmanship of the body... |

Any time I drill pre finished glass, I use a small drill for a pilot hole, then use a tapered fine grinding stone in my Dremel at low speed.
This works well for me, just go slow. Another method is a small hand reamer. I purchased a micro set at my lhs. I do not know the make as they do not have a label on them. The stone works better imho. HW.

I use a small drill bit in a cordless, just go slow.

Thanks guys that helps a lot!
I went ahead and assembled the front former yesterday evening and let it sit all night to dry. The best "wood glue" I had sitting around was Gorilla Glue which expands, so I need to take my Dremel and sand down the excess on the outside and in the holes.... no big deal. You can see the basswood piece I cut along the bottom. |

Had a great day at the field yesterday... minus the fact that it was cold as ****! Tighter belt definitely gave me better tail authority and found a happy medium with gyro gain. "Naked" mechanics get upwards of 10 minutes per pack flying FF circuits, eights, and general "scale" type flying... I'm curious of what I will get with the fuselage.
Once I got home I immediately stripped her down (tail rotor and skids) so that I could start mocking it up in the body. I must say the mechanics fit much better now that I removed the factory attached former where front of the mechanics sit, it's also MUCH easier to get them in and out. I went ahead and marked inside where the frame sits, now I need to make a cardboard template or something so that I can drill some holes and get these baby mounted.... FINALLY! I plan to shorten up the skids a bit too since these white ones are actually for the 470 Super Scale version, I wanted white though to be more true to scale. Here's some mock up shots: |

Shortened the skids up some... now she doesn't sit too high nor have an obnoxious gap between the steps and front doors.

New holes are drilled and she's mounted! I added a strip of thin foam tape on the bottom of the mechanics where the frame attaches to the fuselage to help absorb any vibrations. It looks like I should be able to achieve a solid CoG by simply moving the battery forward a good bit and not have to add any extra weight. All that's left now is to had the horizontal fins / detail parts and get some better weather!

Looks good. The weather will be there soon enough. I will be going tomorrow. Maybe I'll bring the 500D, it looks strange doing a loop but, it sure is fun. The AS350 needs the mechanics pulled out as I found a screw floating around inside so, it is grounded.
Good luck on the maiden .

Detail parts are on and this project is a wrap! Weather looks good enough for the weekend, I believe this baby may get some air time!
Thanks for everyone's help on my first scale build! \m/ |

Got out to the filed yesterday evening to give her a whirl.... damn this thing looks killer in flight! This is my first time flying a scaler and wow what a difference the extra weight makes in stability! I couldn't be any happier with the outcome!

Awesome, my first one felt like flying a brick but, it gets comfortable.

Red Bull AS350 Build (450 Size)
I decided to re-engineer the tail skid / rotor guard tonight, originally I bent it from a clothes hanger and epoxied it to the tail but I knocked it off just transporting her to the field.... not quite as scale looking, but solid! Now I just need to patch it up and add a little paint!
