450 3D need motor bearing mod?
I"ve searched but those skills are about as well honed as my flying abilitys. Does the 450 3D need the motor mod like the 300x and 450x?
Thanks |

Re: 450 3D need motor bearing mod?
Yes, it has the same problem. That being said, some people have very good luck with them after doing the Loctite mod

Has anyone had any issues with the 450H motor? Does it also need the lock tight mod?

I don't have one yet, but from everything I've heard the 450H is solid right out of the box and is what I plan on putting in my 450X and converted 450 3D when the time comes.

I'm really to much of a newb to give you a good answer but if you search the 450x threads it's explained very well, even a top notch video on how to do it. Now I've got four of them to do.

You loctite the motor shaft to the bearings. Otherwise, the shaft spins within the bearings, causing both to wear out.

It's the same as for 450x, 300x see: https://www.helifreak.com/showpost.p...66&postcount=8

Problem with the mod is that when the bearings do wear out it is about impossible to get the motor apart to replace them. Ask me why I am looking for a new motor!!

So you can choose to not do the mod, and look for a new motor after 50 flights, or do the mod, and look for a new motor after 200 flights!

So this questions was asked, and kinda got an answer, but does anyone actually have the motor (E-Flite 450) and confirm that its not in need of the bearing mod?
And will the stock ESC work fine with the 450? Quote:

Mine failed as well with less than 20 packs through it and that was during my learning to hover. I was able to take mine apart and chuck it in the lathe and bored the center housing to hold a "sleeve" of bearings so to speak.
The motor shaft was worn where the original bearing was so I bored behind it for another bearing the same size and behind that for one with a slightly smaller O.D. then where the OEM bearing was a left another OEM size one in and then shimmed up to the circlip with vriouse pieces from a hardware bag for the blade 450. I"ll try and post some pics of what I've done, but after at least 30 more packs the motor is still fine as of checking it last night. I also used "stud and bearing" loc-tite to secure the shaft into the new bearigns as well as the new bearings into the housing I'm new to heli's in general so I was un-aware of this when I bought the bird last month but this fix has been great, I know i'm new here but if anyone would like their motor repaired in the same manner i'd be glad to do it on the dirt cheap (I have plenty of forum references for my mail order work as it's all I really have since being on disability these days) (feel free to ask about turboglenn on the DSMtuners forum for any references to my character or reliability) *i'm not offering this to make money but to simply offer a fix that's a little better than basically "glueing" the motorchaft to the bearings: for anyone wanting it done)* (i'm u8sing a new screen name here to keep my stalker of an Ex-wife from hunting me here as well LOL ) |

No, because the motor shaft gets worn out. At that point the motor is essentially junk.

i'm sorry this was witrh the stock motor, being new to heli's I am not use to motor variations this small, when I was into electrics last there was the Mabuchi 360 and 540 sizes and that was it (can you tell i'm getting old LOL)
but If there's not been a change to shaft size or bearing quality and possibly it's I.D. then I would assume this would be a possible failure on any motor with these specs. I've put about 8-10 packs a day on this repair for the alst week and it's holding great though for what it's worth..sorry again for the confusion |

My first 420 motor shaft spun in the bearing too after a couple months. I replaced it with a 440 about 6 weeks ago and used blue loctite before I installed it. I have started a fair bit of 3D and now the 440 spun too.
Horizon Hobby is sending me a new motor but said they had not heard of it before and had no suggestions to help it last longer. They are sending me a couple spare bearings. They said PN BLH 4534 is the motor bearing and it is 3X7X3. It is a bearing for somewhere on the 300X I am going to try the green loctite this time and hopefully I can salvage this motor for a spare. |
