Paper canopies - the revenge
Hello everyone I'm fairly new here... in fact this is my first post
I'm very happy with my new MQX, only one thing really i can't stand: the stock canopy. So I've started figuring out how to make my own version in a cheap and fashionable way. This involved a lot of lurking in various forums, tutorials, and stuff... In the end, after several attempts, I've obtained somewhat acceptable results. After all this effort, what was the next best thing? Sharing! Hence why I have created this account So here's what I came up with (scroll below for free templates): "TDR clone" canopy You've probably already seen something like this around... but this time in paper form, and completely customizable to your liking. Cutting and glueing the pieces together might require a little effort and practice... but if you're used to handle tiny helicopter parts, you should have no big problem. Free bonus prepainted templates included for sheer awesomeness: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...R_template.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...carb_green.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...white_carb.png "REX clone" canopy Ok, I'm cheating. This is the same as above... but in regular helicopter canopy form. Enjoy: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...X_template.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...canopy_REX.png "Starfighter" canopy And, finally, for the scifi fan: the canopy i think the MQX should have been shipped in bundle with since the beginning: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...r_template.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...ghter_gold.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...fighter_BW.png USEFUL TECHNICAL INFO: all those pictures were created in a 300 dpi (dot per inch) resolution. Make sure before printing that your printer match this setting, as the canopies are pretty tight on the hardware. All designs were made for the X configuration; the black squares show where to cut holes for the pod booms. |

Ubiquitous shark canopy http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web..._REX_shark.png The space fighter needed some more love, so here's a USAF stealth version: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...ghter_usaf.png Enjoy! |

Well, printed and cut it out. I was surprised to see that it looks like it will actually work!
What did you use to fasten them together? standard tape? some kind of glue? Thinking about it at work I wanted to use hot glue, but actually looking at it now I'm thinking that scotch tape will be better and easier. Any (+) type canopies? |

Well, I leave small paper tabs at each edge, and put stick glue on them
Once i'm done, I spray a couple layers of liquid plastic for added strenght and protection. As per + stile designs: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15363798/web...ut_01/Wasp.png Be careful when printing, I've made it pretty tight to minimize propwash interference. |

Awesome Darsh!
What is this liquid plastic you speak of? Kind of like scotch guard? |

Kinda sorta. It's just like transparent paint, but of rubbery texture when dried up (so it won't crack). I've got myself a can at my local DIY shop. I've never used scotchgard so I can't tell if it's the same or not; but as long as the result is good, go for it.
Or, you can skip the coating entirely; but i can't vouch for outdoor usage then |

Thanks! Will figure something out.
What's the best way to print these up? Some kind of photo paper for the stiffness will be good (first try was plain paper, worked OK). Mainly concerned about getting the sizing correct. Can I just print directly from MS Paint (sized to fit a single 8.5x11" sheet of paper)? That's what I did for my first one, but I can't test fit until tomorrow evening. |

I've always used plain paper, but i think that photo or glossy paper should be ok. Be careful with sizing: if possible, you should print as "actual size" (100% scaling). Any amount of resizing might end you up with a canopy too small or one that gets hit by the blades...

@Darsh
could you please give some more detail on what brand and type you are using? Any information would be helpful. I've searched stores near me and I cannot find anything labeled liquid plastic or anything that the store owners or workers can guarantee me will not crack when it bends. |

plasti-dip (spray) might work, it would be heavy in anything but the lightest coats. It's basically a spray on electrical tape.
I really think scotch-guard might do the trick, but not sure specifically. Actually, now that I think about it more, thin coats of plasti-dip spray might be best.... http://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Dip-In.../dp/B000LNN11G |

I use waterproof inkjet map paper for my canopies. Very strong.
