Default Battery life

Hey guys,

I'm curious about battery life on night flying setups. I'm rigging up a stretched Protos (470mm). Planning to use perfect regulators kit on the blades, and the LED tape for the canopy and boom.

How long will the 150 mah battery last on the blades? Based on the number of LEDs, I was estimating 15 minutes or maybe 3 flights?

I want to power the leds from a separate 2s pack. I have no idea how many lights will fit on the heli, but I'm estimating 3 meters or so, at 400 mah per meter, is 1.2a. Round up to 1.5a for safety. By these estimates, a 450 mah 2s ought to get me 3 flights also. Does this seem right?

I agree, the micro kit I have for the mcpx-bl has enough lipo for about 4 flights. I would expect them to size the larger set similarly.

My personal opinion is that people usually put too many LEDs on the canopy making it several times brighter than the blades. Going 2s (8v) instead of 3s (12v) will reduce the brightness of LED strings rated for 12v, but some colors may not even light or go out if the pack goes too low. I think a better approach is to use a small 3s pack and reduce the count of LEDs or choose colors carefully to keep from overpowering the blades.

As for your question, I'm not sure how the lower voltage affects your time calculation. If you were using 3s you should see around 20min of flying time at 1.5a.

Thanks for the input. I'll start with a 2s 460mah I have from my 130x. If I have any issues, I'll look into 3s

I guess I lied. I'm ordering 1 meter of each color light strip, and I mysteriously ended up with 2 3s 370mah packs.

I wanted the 180mah, but they're out of stock

I have a question.

I bought the led tape strips from hobbyking. They feel pretty secure, however I'm wondering if most people go over them later with ca, or additional tape or anything. Specifically, I plan to wrap the boom like a candy cane, I'm wondering if I'll need any supplemental attachment

Ive done many led set ups on airplanes and i never trust just the sticky back peeling. i always put a speck of hot glue on each end. now on a heli you might not want to use hot glue but i did see a guy who used zip tied to fasten his lights to his boom, i thought that was a cool idea.

FWIW, I used clear heat shrink on my boom.

Interesting idea, I'll consider that. If it's heavy, i could at least do the start and end of each strip

One blade done. Decided to use 2 leds per point, so I need to reorder pink to finish the other blade. Then I have to decide if I want to clear coat over it or not.

Canopy is also done. Now I just have to test the base heli, and outfit it with some lights

This forum will survive!

Bought batteries and shrink wrap at Frys. Just need pigtails to solder to the blades

Checked balance at this point, cg is within 1mm, and overall weight is pretty close. Shouldn't need much tape when finished

Nice! My blades have been almost done for 9months and you're probably going to get them in the air first.

Bwahaha, you have lots of faith in me

On the maiden flight the heli shut down and fell out of the sky. I want to make sure it's 100% mechanically sound before I strap 8 hours worth of work onto it!

Connector issue may delay the project.

The connectors on the battery look exactly like Nano CPX connectors...but they're not.

My pigtails arrived today and I can't plug the battery into them. If I can't find the plugs I need for the batteries, I'll convert the whole rig to microdeans (I have these on hand. I don't prefer to use microdeans, because they'll be a bit heavier

Interesting, but those seem to be servo plugs. I took the easy route and bought nano cpx batts. I don't like them a much as the square packs I bought. The nano packs are long and skinny, so they'll disrupt airflow over more of the blade than the smaller batteries would have

The different JST style connectors can be purchased in many different pin configurations (including two position). One of them should match your little battery connector.

I just went to the LHS that sells Horizon stuff and bought 2 nano sized conversion cables (nano cpx to mcpx) and clipped off the mcpx side.

Still no flights on this thing

Flying without my night setup, it has a wicked tail resonance, and a terrible cyclic bobble. My servos were really slow, so I replaced them with Futaba S9650. Now I'm trying to nail down the tail vibe.

Went to finish up my blades...one battery was puffed, the other had 0.0v. Notified the vendor, he said, no problem and sent me new packs. Both of these had voltage, but we're so puffed I thought the foil was gonna burst. Major let down. Ordered some Hyperion packs for 2.5x the price. Hopefully these are good.

It's crunch time. Target deadline is Friday. Here's an update picture.

Blade batteries are probably oversized. Tested them for 20 mins and I put 60 mah into them. I can safely use double that, so plenty of safety there.

I'll test chassis lighting next. Here's my updated pictures
