Redline 56 engine

I just got my X50f kit with a redline 56. I was reading several forums and I am getting mixed feedback for setup on this engine. So I am posting here to try an clarify some questions I have.

1. Do I run the shim supplied with the engine to run 30 % fuel? Some say not too but the manual says I should.

2. When breaking in the engine, did you follow the instructions for how many turns out you should be on your needles? People say they were burning engines in the break in process using the settings listed in the manual and therefore suggest not to follow the instructions. How many turns out did you go?

I am currently running a 53. I have not run a 56. My 53 came with extra shims for 30% fuel so I put them in.

I followed the manual on the needle settings as far as getting the engine started.

I found that after a short hover when landing the engine was running on longer than I like before settling back to a tickover, so I richened up the idle screw. Factory is to have it flush with the case mine is now sticking out a bit. For the main needle I just keep adjusting it so that I get a little warmth on the back plate. As it goes cold so I lean the main a couple of clicks and keep going. Obviously if I landed after a minute or two and found the back plate hotter than I like then I would of richened up the main.

I can only assume people burnt up their engines because they can't work out that the engine was lean and just accepted what was in the manual. The manual should not have such an error but to blindly keep going when I expect the engine sounded horrible is down to the user at the end of day.

I believe they released an addendum about the break in process but I could be thinking of a different engine. I cant remember where I put mine for break in. I am using 30% and I put the thicker shim in and it has had no issues. I am almost through my 4th gallon of fuel. Only issue I have had was the needle valve body coming undone and the muffler coming loose repeatedly but its double nutted now.

I have over 6 gallons on my X50F with the Redline 56. I have always run it with Rotor Rage 30% fuel with no extra shim. I just took it out and installed it just as it came.

I have done some updates as it was going through the fuel. I bought the heli last October I believe. It has been a great heli with lots of power.

To keep your muffler tight and never have any problems with it coming loose you need to tighten it again once it is flying and has some heat in the engine. Land the heli after about 2 min of flying and tighten them muffler bolts while its still hot and you will never have them come loose again. ( well I haven't anyway ) I have been doing this for over 10 years flying rc helis and mufflers don't come loose.

Tighten it while it is still hot is the key.

I'd sure like to come up with a new in box 56. My 53 with the OS carb has been a blast. I am running the YS 60sr now, but I don't expect it to live long. I have an OS 3 needle carb ready when I come up with a 56.
