venture 30 tail problem
I've got 1/2 gallon through my venture 30 and the tail has been flawless. i had it out today and the tail rotor control started fading when applying nose right. when i got it on the ground i could get full nose left pitch but the tail rotors would not go past nuetral pitch when applying full nose right. i killed the engine, shut down power and carried it to the bench. when i switched power back on the tail started working again. i'm using a 6102tx, r700rx, g410t gyro and jr537 servos. only difference today was the air temperature @ 28deg. previously had it up in 40deg. plus weather. any suggestions as to what caused this failure?

other than asking the obvious question about batteries..?
boom servo mount slippage maybe? Gyro reset due to lower available amperage due to cold? |

i'm using a jr 1400mah nicad pack fully charged 12 hours before flight with my Triton charger. the battery is a little suspect as i lose about 300 to 350 mah after the battery sits (not connected) for 12 hours or so. This is after a full charge. does this sound normal for nicads? The tx battery was fully charged just before flight and tx meter was showing 10.2 volts when the tail started acting up. The tail servo is not a boom mount but was not loose in the frame mount. I'll put the rx flight battery on charge again and see how much mah were used up.
Thanks, Mike |

I would invest in a larger capacity battery.
When I was running NiCds I would use no less than 2300mAh packs. |

I would replace the battery. If the battery is losing 300-350 Mah in 12 hours odds are that there is a bad cell in it. I won't use a pack that does not show 80% of capacity after sitting for a week. Your pack is showing that after 12 hours.

Thanks for your input guys. I agree with you on the battery. I'll get a new, larger cap. battery. I suspected a problem with this one since i got the heli. Previous to this last flight, I've charged it no more that a couple hours before using. The times i have fully charged it and then let it sit overnight (canceled flying due to too much wind ) it always lost between 350 - 500 mah. I've also checked for mech. binding etc... and all looks good. Hopefully the servo or gyro is not the problem. The rudder servo is a JR DS537. I've put a lot of manual resistance on it and it does not stall.

After replacing the tail servo with known good servo, replacing the rx battery, changing the gyro mounting tape, checking for mechanical binding and cleaning/securing all electrical connections, the gyro is still acting up. Also played with the gain from 30% to 80% - no change. Took the top case off and checked for signs of moisture, corrosion and loose connections and did not find any obvious problem. It seems to work fine when i switch the tail lock off. however, once turned on in tail lock mode the servo will slowly migrate to max. throw in one direction or the other with no stick input or heli movement. this takes about one minute from power on. if i wiggle the rudder stick the tail slider will center then start to creep to one side or the other again until it maxes out to one side. If the engine is running, it accelerates the servo creep where it takes only 10-15 seconds to max out left or right. It does not do this when tail lock is manually switched to off. Is it time for a new gyro?
