Default Dual power supplies for 24-36v

Hey guys,
I have the efuel 12-18v 30a power supply, it works great for me. However I see some chargers can handle 24v+ and I noticed a lot of users connect server power supplies in series.

So I was wondering if you can connect 2 of the efuel power supplies on series? As buying a 2nd one would be cheaper than getting a whole new 1000w system.

I am not that savvy on power supplies so I thought I would ask.

Probably not. At least without some modifications. Check to see if the DC ground has continuity to the case. Use a screw as anodized surfaces are not conductive. Also check the AC ground to the DC ground. If the DC ground has connectivity to either, one supply would need to be modified. Also the input limit on the Powerlab6 is 32v. Don't go any higher.

Two server supplies are still cheaper than a second eFuel.

Thank you for the reply! I cant see any continuity between the ac inputs or dc outputs and eachother or the case. But the two dc groups inputs have continuity (as expected) and the same with any two screws on the case.

I cant seem to find any server psu that will be cheaper, unless I dont know where I am looking.. We get a bit ripped off in Aus

Default Dell 6650 server supply

I just purchased a Dell Power Edge 6650 supply for $27 (free shipping).
You could buy one of these to use with your e-fuel.

The 6650 supply has a separate chassis ground from the DC ground.
So even if your efuel supply had common ground, it can be used as the first supply in series. The dell can supply 72 amps, but you will be limited by your e-fuel supply in case you ever get a second PL6...:>)

For server supplies, I'm not sure what your options in Au are. In the US, they are pretty cheap through Ebay. Regarding the eFuel, if there is no continuity between the DC ground and the case or the AC ground then it may be possible. I would recommend contacting the manufacture before trying it.

feathermerchantrc.com sells already-modified server supplies, they add $50 for international shipping.

http://www.feathermerchantrc.com/

Also check with DSW, he sells 24V 1800W supplies (more than that on 220V), $110, and he appears to ship internationally, I'd find out what he'd charge to ship to you.

lots of folks in Australia doing this. Actually the guy who wrote the guide is:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1292514

unless you're hardcore electronics savvy, please pay someone to do the work for you (as people posted above) I'm sure there is a guy in Australia making them and selling them. You're really lucky doing high power charging, because you have 240Volts at the wall

Hahahah! I have done a psu from computers to 300w power supplies.
But they were relativly low powered so I was comfortable with that.

Just when we are talking 1000w things can get risky... So I would much rather purchased a modded one from someone in the community or one like my efuel one.

Thanks for the help everyone

I have used the feathermerchant 24v47a for a long time.. super high quality.. pre-wired with EC5. Really good stuff.

If you have a 24V servo type power supply running say like an icharger 306B parallel charging at max rate 6S lipos can I tap into 12V from one of the PS units only for my Dual 10 Amp charger?

.

Absolutely yes. Just realize that if your 24V charger is using 25amps, and your 12V charger is using 10 amps, the one power supply is providing 35 amps....which is not a problem.

I have this on mine. I ran three wires (Gnd, +12v, & +24v) from my server supplies into a plastic project box.
Mounted two sets of banana jacks on the box. Then brought out the ground and +24v to a EC5 connector for my PL6.

I would also suggest you put two LED's on your server supply (one for each supply).
I had one supply die (before I had LED's), and I was still charging batteries...but I did not notice that the PL6 was just running on 12V. The dead supply acted like a wire and passed the current through.

Default Added a picture of 12V connections

This is my set-up. The black box has banana jacks for 12V connections, and the EC5 connectors are for two PL6 chargers.

Notice the two power-on LEDS to confirm that both supplies are working.
In the foreground is an extra connector that I cut from a Dell power distribution board.
It makes it very easy to swap supplies if one fails.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I think I will go for one of the Dell supplies, or maybe the 1200W efuel supply as with postage of the Dell supplies it ends up being a similar price as I can get the 1200w efuel one locally.

I have no idea how much shipping is, etc.

Merely a consideration, server supplies are likely designed & built better than hobby supplies. They're meant for 24/7/365 operation, to run a business, while hobby supplies are... not.

There's no warranty on server supplies, of course. But a pair of them on 220V could provide an awful lot of power.

Thats a good point actually. I didnt think of that.

I have a powerlab 6, so takes up to 40a, so would I need the full 30v to make use of it? Or would 24v at 40a be enough? Thats why I looked at efuel one, 30v and over 40a so I can get 1000w with 80% efficiency.

Sorry, maybe I looked up the wrong supply. This is the eFuel 1200W I had Googled:

http://www.hobbypartz.com/26p-efuel-60a.html

1200W, but a max of 24V.

If the one you're looking at goes to 30V, that puts a mark in its favor, vs server supplies, which will be 24-25V.

For figuring out what your PL6 can provide, with different inputs, have a look here:

http://www.revolectrix.com/PL6_calculators_Main.htm

Calculator 1 can show you the outputs you'll get with different power supply configurations.

Ahhh yeah thanks! Yeah there is the new version, but its about 280aud and getting the converted server psu will be around 200aud. So i guess if i want a few more volts and less size its going to cost 80
