Tail does not hold when gyro plugged in
I have read over a lot of the related threads, and nothing seems quite the same. I have the SR bound to my DX6I with the settings recommended on this site. When the gyro wire is not plugged in its normal and the tail holds fine. When I plug in the gyro wire into the receiver it all goes south. The tail spins way to fast all the time sending the tail to the left, even with the rudder stick all right it sill does not hold. I have the gyro gain on the transmitter set to 60, if that matters. Any thoughts?
Thanks. |

Did you adjust the gain at the gyro itself? From what I've read people are having success with it set near the middle. I haven't tried it just yet but I plan to.

When its plugged into the receiver doesn't it not matter where it is set of the gyro itself? When its not plugged in, the helicopter is great.

Raise the gain until it holds or until the tail wags.

Also, I'd double check that you have the gyro setup in the radio correct. If you have it incorrect than you'll have a problem. Make sure your rudder trim is centered too.
Finally, remember that the rudder has two settings controlled by the switch on the face of the radio labeled rudder. In the radio I set mine to 45% for one position and 65% for the other. You may have to tweak those to get the tail hold you like but basic tail control should be easy with those settings.

If you have the gyro's signal wire plugged in, then you do it in the radio. If not plugged in, you do it via the pot on the gyro.

Bob O,
I like your suggestion. Good logic. Would it be fair to 'assume' get the pot adjusted to fly correctly with the Gyro's Gain Wire unplugged and work your way fwd and then plug it in and adjust the Tx if needed? |

Plugging in the gyro wire over rides the adjustment on the gyro. Now all of your adjusting will be on your tx. You need to make sure which switch is controlling your gyro on your tx..... and which way it is switched. I am using a DX 7 and my gain is set at 73. At 60, you are not getting enough control. A dx 6i has a 2 position switch, so you could have your gain set to to say 73, but have the switch in the wrong position, so put both settings at say 75. When ever you make a change to your gyro setting, it is wise to repower your rx. J

Understood. Thank you for your input.
I have just finished my first hover/flight a few minutes ago. Wow! I did unplug the Gain channel on the Rx and tweaked the Gain on the Gyro (one hair of an adjustment each time) until the sweet spot appeared! Love it! She is as tame as I had hoped for! Sweet! Btw, I tried a set of these blades from my old Blade CP I found on Ebay. For about $2 a set the do 'great' for hovering & mild forward flying. I don't know how they would do in any extreme flying, but they are lighter than the wooden style and just a tad wider (5mm?). I did not notice any head speed issues, in fact since they are mostly foam with CF rod running through them, they don't damage anything if you have an Ah Oh. All you lost was about $2 and your off to the races again!. Here it is on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/blades-for-E-fli...item23063bb616 Love this forum! |

I agree with you. I think if you wanted to do some Extreme 3D these blades are not strong enough, nor are they fully symentrical.
Interesting you should said there is a steel rod in the wooden ones. Last night I had an opps (dumb thumbs) and I trashed a set of the EFlite blades. After I took them off I looked them over and broke one blade in two and mine are all wood through and through. I wander which blade(s) you are referring too? BTW, anybody know who is selling the belt conversion for the SR I have been reading about in this thread? |

The belt conversion looks like it'll be offered by the great guys over at www.freestyle-hobby.com, but it's not available yet. If memory serves, which it often doesn't, the conversion is still going through some tweaking. Hopefully it'll be released soon at a reasonable price.

I'm referring to the SR blades. The CP woodies do not have steel rods inside. I haven't broken apart a set of SR blades to verify this, it's just what I've heard.

I see.
The set I broke open last night were the factory SR blades. Solid wood. |

hmmmm.. I don't know then. Can anyone else remember which blades had the steel rod inside of them? I swear that I read somewhere that the SR's did. I've got a funny feeling that the design was changed. That would explain why the price dropped a few dollars on their website not too long ago... I'm going to measure the weight of my OEM blades vs the set that I just bought recently when I get home.

I'm bummed!
Flew my SR the other day and the tail, out of no where kept slinging itself out 90 degrees to the right without any input from me??? Set her down and trimmed the mixing pot down just a hair, test flew it and bang, happened again???? Started to adjust the gyro down and no effect. It would happen at random intervals either just hovering or during fwd flt. Well about 12 times was pushing it to much and it toasted itself into the ground. Totally destroyed the head (new parts ordered & on the way). I am thinking that these type tail systems are just too weak for the performance needed. I might just get the belt drive upgrade that Free Style Hobby has. Anybody else having/had a similar problem? |
