Wildcat ready to fly
Been flying a Corsair for a while now and seeing as how the crashes are coming further and fewer between I asked Santa for a new plane for Christmas.
The Wildcat was under the tree and now that its all assembled just have to wait for some decent weather to maiden it. New years day is supposed to be just under the freezing mark with sun and minimal winds so I've got my fingers crossed. |

Keep us posted. When I break my P-51 and or my T-28, the F-4 is a looked forward to replacement. The exact version depends on what survives my future PZ crashes and what is salvagable......

My dad loved his and from what little bit I flew it it was a very stout plane in the sky and gets lots of positive reviews for flying like a dream. It's pretty quick and looks awesome on fast low passes.
Side note, he just got a PZ P-47 and so far that thing is impressinve looking. It's retract and flap ready. Don't know how powerful it is yet but it's sexy, and may be the first warbird I cave on and buy, especially after seeing how easily the retracts are installed. The airframe only is also available for around $100 too if you wanted different components than it comes with.

Please keep us posted. Glad to see many of us were good boys and girls and got what we wanted for Christmas. Wildcat one of my favorites. Now PZ needs a Zero in the same scale for an adversary. Mo hope to hear more about that P-47. Damn if this keeps up I'm gonna have to get a warbird too.

I have had the Wildcat since they first came out.
It is as easy to fly (if not easier) than the T-28. It has no tendency to tip stall, and is a pure pleasure to fly. The rudder is beautifully effective. Aileron control is still positive at very low air speed (much better than the Stinson, whose aileron response slows down at low speed-the rudder on that one stays very effective at low speed so it is not an issue). The Stinson is still a great flying airplane, by the way. I fly between half and 2/3 throttle most of the time-it will fly for about 10 minutes like that with no problem. The P-47 is sitting in the box waiting for me as soon as I can get to it.

The Wildcat is a good plane. I haven't seen any bad things about it on a few forums I frequent. It's basically the same setup as the P-51BL, but it comes with functional rudder. One thing I would note is the first thing that should be upgraded is the ESC.
The P-47 does look really nice. Each PZ plane that comes out keeps getting better and better. I can't wait for a PZ twin engine warbird! De Havilland Mosquito or P-38 perhaps?

The maiden flight didn't go very well.Gave it the usual hand launch and she rolled badly to the left, don't know why. Everything seemed to be set up great, don't know if it needs some right aileron to counteract the torque of the power 10 motor. Needs a new cowl and give it another go tomorrow.

Dang, sorry to hear, I've noticed that planes roll left on a hand launch, guess it's the torque similar to a heli. I prefer wheels and a runway myself, I've only HL'd my micros and 3D foamy. Maybe try compensating with a little right tilt on the throw or pitching it harder and higher, definitely have to be quick to get to the stick as well. Is there anything to stand on to throw it from?
@Marco, hopefully not to derail but the my dad maidened the P-47 yesterday and it looked real nice in the air. It isn't a speed demon but he's read that the porp form the Extra 300 will wake it up. I didn't fly it but he said it was nice to fly. Mechanically his was set up for less throw but the pushrods could be moved to the inner holes to increase throw. Back on topic.....

On take-off, using excessive right aileron will add to the problem by stalling the left wing. Throw in some adverse yaw and it spirals. Ailerons at the end of a wing dont get much help from propblast. Rudder usually works. Too much throttle can add to the problem, especially with too much prop. I often use a lower pitch prop for maiden flights, more punch at slow speeds. You can even tilt the toss.

You need to give it a good push, so you have some airspeed so the controls work.
I maidened my Wildcat yesterday. Nice flying plane.

How can you tell a Heli guy set up a plane? It crashes
Went to the field today flew the 550, went awesome. Flew the Corsair, flies like a dream. Crashed the Wildcat, found that I set up the elevator reversed Learned something new today. New motor mount and some crazy glue, it'll fly next time. |

Finally got the Wildcat in the air, had a 11/7 prop on it. Flew awesome easy and stable to fly. Crisp response and freakin fast. Next flight I'll try a 10/8, 10/9 and maybe a 10/10. Should be smokin fast.

I'm jealous. I want one. but cannot justify it until either the P-51 or the T-28 goes down, and then have to see what rises out of the dust. The T-28 I have now is the result of a great garage sale and 8 seconds of very unimpressive piloting of the first P-51 (parts is parts). The planes have gotten a little smarter now and seem to keep surviving despite my best (worst) efforts..... fly on.... :-)

I test flew my P-47 yesterday-it handles very similarly to the Wildcat (which had been my favorite, now it is a toss up).
All very, very good airplanes!

Ran a couple more paks through the Wildcat today, 11/8.5 prop on it. Flew like a demon One of the guys I fly with recommended going up to as much as a 10/10 but I'll have to check to see how many amps its drawing, the esc that is in there is only 30 amps, don't want to burn that up and crash.

Yup, that's the one. Stock it's a bit slow but a new prop will fix that, otherwise she's a beauty in the air.

I put two more flights on it early this morning-this is the best flying airplane I have ever had.
Very, very easy to take off and land-absolutely solid ground handling, very slow with full flaps, snaps right and left with ease and very stable recovery.
