lynx upgrades for miniP

hey guys, just got one. It's comlete but I'm placing an order for my other helis and I'm wondering if there are any must haves for teh Mini P from lynx?

I have a full lynx tail on my mini protos and it is rock solid! I would definitely look at the CNC pinion belt tensioner and tail pulley tensioner.

Also, keep in mind http://www.msh-direct.com for protos parts. Great service and parts usually in stock. If not in stock, shoot Bill an email and he will do what he can to get it for you. A lot of people have had issues with the stock pinion. An updated pinion has been released and BIll has them in stock, I would look into that (cost is $28), but well worth the ease of mind and knowing you are getting a quality product.

I would rather get the lynx solid pinion than the new pinion. There are problems with the new pinion too Also, get some coloured skids and tail blades to help with visibility.

The new pinions lock up. Save the money, time and stress. Buy the lynx solid pinions. The wrap around canopies are great for visibility.

And the tail....oh man the tail. Stock tail always took fiddling to get smooth. The lynx tail bolted right on and its smoother than your wifeys fresh Brazilian! Lol. Seriously though, no fiddling to get the tail perfect. Build and fly

What About the belt tensioner?

The belt tensioner is bling imo. The bearings in it are great. But it sticks out further than the MSH one. Neither good nor bad. Except...I couldn't get my boom out far enough to run 360s.

I put the stock tensioner back, and I was able to slide the boom back enough to clear

I guess we all have different experiences with some upgrades... I never had a problem with the new pinion (I'm not a smack 3d flyer, more sport/ big air/ beginner level 3d). I'm also running a stretched boom so fitting the tensioners weren't an issue for me with 360mm blades

I also run a stretch boom. Lynx tension, 360s and 62s could touch if press hard enough. Especially with the lower lynx dfc head. Stock tensioner, and pulling the tail boom back cleared up the interference.

My "new owb" from msh. I had two. Both locked up on the second flight. 3s packs, 1300kv 6s motor. Headspeed 1900 rpm. Mild 3d and piro circuits. On landing, the owb had locked. I unlocked then and tried at full hs on a 6s, locked again. Threw them away. It's not a "too-much power" or "flight style" issue. It's a "not enough quality control" or "poor design" issue. I lean towards quality control since some are good and some are bad. But at $20+ per pinion, I'm not going to buy a half dozen just to het one good one.

As much as i like all the lynx upgrades, you can easily double the price of your kit with them, and imho is not needed. The stock als flies great for me.

I do like the lynx ultra dampeners. It replaces the rubber ones with a solid plasic. Wont dampen the blade flapping anymore, but is still wobble free at low headspeed, tracking is better, do not wear out, last in crashes, and makes cyclic faster.

at first i was hesitant to put them on, but after a new msh dampener set wore in 30 flights i tried it and upgraded the rest of the msh fleet after the first flight

The tail pitch lever and a solid pinion are the two best upgrades, IMO. The rest is really just bling.

I also like the lynx dampeners. They last forever and fly well even at low headspeeds.

True, I forgot about those. I have them in mine as well. Actually I have the full metal tail, but the single biggest improvement in the tail was the pitch lever.

And of course the solid pinion lets me keep it in the air for more than half a flight at a time.

I had issues with the stock tail box. I bought three and had to mix and match to find one that wasn't warped. MSH told me it was normal, just bolt it up and its fine. However, once all three bolts were in the tail shaft would notch/drag. Bought new pulleys, new tail shaft. All of them did this. Took hours if mixing and matching to find one I was happy with

I would have to recommend the Lynx DFC on the "must have" list.
I've had nothing but annoyance with the stock mini Protos head/grips since I've owned it (~3 yrs).
Mushy collective around center, requiring aggressive S-curve and fast/light blades to tame, somewhat.

The Lynx head is pricy at $85 but my miniP is like a new heli after I installed it.

Any issues running lower RPM with the DFC head? I have a Lynx DFC head on a 450X, and it is only happy at certain headspeeds, otherwise it gets the cyclic shakes. Oddly, it will run smooth at my lower and upper headspeeds, but not the middle one. Very odd.

Stock Mini P head (with Lynx dampers) runs at anything from 2200 to 3200 as smooth as glass.

Ive run mine at 1800-1900, 2600, 2800, 3000-3800 all smooth without bobles

That's good to hear! I was hesitant about trying it, I've never been a big DFC fan.

I think it flies a little "crisper". But I imagine it will be harder on the servos in a crash

Just fitted the Lynx tail pitch lever to mine. The quality is excellent. Planning to get a few flights in this afternoon
