Sport? Smack? 3D? Lite 3D? Hard 3D? With people calling their skill by a certain name what really defines a skill level? I see videos of people who fly sport and they fly really well. So what draws the line between skills? What manouver do you think should be the line between one skill set to another?

I'm definitely SMACK.

After I SMACK the ground, I SMACK myself in the forehead in a WTF moment. Immediately thereafter my ego is SMACKED as my wallet gets SMACKED when ordering replacement parts.

I'd like to say that I fly light 3d, but compared to many others, it's more like sort flying with some sloppy 3d thrown in haha.

Hopefully I can hit the simulator hard this winter and gain some stuff to try come spring.

Sport flying: inverted flight, loops (inverted and upright), rolls, stall turns with varying number of piros and sometimes rolls, flips, tumbles (flips while moving forward), straight line backward flight (I need to work on my turns).

That's me. "Sloppy 3d" or "sloppy smack" with < 500.

I beat my 300cfx like a red headed stepchild. Definitely more smack / aggressive 3d there. My larger helis I pull fairly aggressive moves but a distance away and basically not connecting one to the next.

Smooth 3d and big air loops/rolls, fast flyby's.

I'm a big air guy for sure. I notice it burns my packs alot faster pulling all that collective .

I don't know that there will ever be a true standard that folks agree to. I like the rchelination link above. If I recall, according to them, I am around basic 3D That is why I like it.

I think a lot of folks define Smack as hard 3D real close to the ground. I don't think I will ever go this far. I would like to be proficient in most 3D maneuvers, but aspire to be more of a smooth 3D guy. At some point, I will have to work up a few "routines" to get everything I know to flow and look appealing to others. I am quite a ways away from that at this point.

According to RCHN I have not gone through the beginner level yet. I am too out of control still although I can do a lot of stuff on the sim. I really want to get to be precise while progressing. I do consider myself a newbie so I think the RCHN system is accurate

Going through the ArchmageAU training has taught me a lot mostly this fact that if I want to progress and minimize my crashes I have to take a rigorous approach. If I had money to spare I might learn by flying but being on the opposite situation I have to walk on the side of caution and rigorous training.

I have ironically learned tons by crashing and re-assembly/setup but I enjoy flying more than building to be honest and also have limited funds for crashes.

I would say smooth 3D with a little bit of smack close up so I can hear/feel the blades. I love watching top pilots perform hard smack but I have no interest in flying that way all the time. I really focus on smooth transitions in my flying - its what ties together a flight IMO. Even if the moves themselves aren't done that great, being able to transition from one move to the next cleanly is what I like most.

My big thing when I fly is piro moves. Piro hurricanes and big air piro loops are so fun and awesome to watch. This flying season i've gotten quite good at piro flips and got confident enough to bring them pretty close to the ground about 50ft in front of me. I can do 7-8 in succession, in both directions, without drifting too far off from where I started them. At the beginning of the season I could only do 2-3 and I did them 150ft in the air before bailing out.

I'd say my style is flying in such a way thats smooth and graceful but somewhat technical at the same time. I like to push the limits a bit every time I fly and usually have at least one "Oh Sh*t" moment every time I head to the field since i push my boundaries a bit. I think this has certainly aided my improving my flying this season. Not being reckless however - I usually sim a certain move for 2-3 weeks before trying it IRL.

This has kept the flying fresh and interesting. I've had periods of time before, usually a couple months, where I started to get a little bored with my flying and had to push past that plateau to the next one. If you work at it you can do so and it opens a whole new door with challenges to conquer.

I think my favorite pilot at the moment is Hiroki Ito and love his flight style. He can smack it with the best of them, but he is a highly accomplished FC3 pilot so his flying and transitions are very polished, accurate, and precise. I haven't seen a style like his anywhere else.

This is one of his best flights i've seen. Check out his transitions and reversals at around 2:50 in the video and you'll see what I mean. I don't see anyone else doing that and he does them absolutely perfectly.

I thought I was basic 3D but looking at that link I think I'm transitioning from inter to advanced😀

I've been known to try and mix things around.

Just a few weekends ago when Thornburg decided to rent a light-tower for a party night, I found myself going between slow smooth stuff, and then right after an all out intense nitro flight ala Mr. Jones. (Had a blast, DA was -2000ft!!!).

Overall though, I don't find myself doing a lot of "aim at the ground and miss" type stuff. More often I try to keep movement going. Eg, doing 4pt tic tocs while moving across my field of vision. Something I want to try next is a circle of piro tic tocks, and then maybe move that into a figure eight.

I just try not to crash. Upright, tail-in.
Once, I actually made 1 complete circle flying outside.
It was a good day.
