JR 8717 Servo squeak
Hello All
I have a set of JR8717 servo's in my Whiplash Gasser . Haven't flown much this year . It has been hanging on the garage wall over the winter and only got a couple flights this year . I am starting to get a real bad squeak or squeal from one or more of the servo's . It started with the throttle servo, whish is also a JR8717. Now I am getting the Squeal from the cyclic servo's . I have not open the servo cases up yet to check for proper lube . Or is this something else that I would have to send in for repair ? Thanks Karl |

Squeal like a mechanical squeak? Or is it like the high pitch digital electronics squeak?
They are metal gear so the electronic noise does kind of resonate through the gear train. Popping the case and giving a little servo grease probably wouldnt hurt if they are years old especially if they been sitting. They have a bearing on the output shaft so I wouldnt think it would squeak alot even with a lack of lube. The little shaft that all the gears run on may be dry too.The ones near the motor spin fairly fast so if its dry they may squeak there. I know after a couple years especially if they been sitting a little regreasing makes all servos a bit quieter and smoother. Make sure to use a dedicated servo grease though.

it is more of a mechanical squeak or squeal . I removed the ball link , and the servo seems hard to move . After rotating the servo arm a few times . The servo frees up and rotates better.

On JR servos you can generally get to the motor bearings. A tiny drop of 10 weight oil on each end of the motor will sometimes fix squeaking noises. By tiny I mean the amount that will stay on the end of a needle.
There are not a lot of parts in a servo to squeak. |
