Vacformed genius canopies pics of what i used etc..
hey everyone! thought i'd post a few pictures of what i used to make my canopies, and how i made them. it was pretty easy really!
what i used.... 2 wooden picture frames a large plastic tub blu tack plaster of paris electrical tape a vacuum cleaner a oven a scalpel vacuform plastic ok..... so i used the electrical tape to tape up a genius canopy to make my mold, this part is time consuming, you need to be careful not to bend the canopy out of shape or your mold will be wrong, it also need to be leak proof!! you're going to pour plaster of paris in there!!!! mix up your plaster of paris, wait for it to set... while thats happening you can make your box!!! basically you need a box/tub that is well sealed, with a grid of holes the same size as your picture frames, and a hole cut for the end of your vacuum cleaner, seal up the cracks around the vacuum cleaner hole so all the air is being drawn through your grid of holes at the top. frame your grid of holes with blu tack/playdough.. whatever.. something squishy so you can get a good seal when you push your frame down... then.... take your picture frames and sandwich your vacuform plastic between them, nail them together.. don't be stingy with the nails.... it needs to be sandwiched tight!!! once your mold is set you can get started!! frame in the oven at approx 230c it takes a few minutes for the plastic to start to sag... when it does, vacuum cleaner on, press your frame down over your mold, the vacuum sucks the molten plastic into place!!! then its just a matter of trim.. and paint!!! i used .5mm styrofoam plastic, but i'm thinking .75 or 1mm might be a bit sturdier... and the pic with the frame on the box was a failed attempt at a nail polish bottle chocolate mold...(don't have pics of doing a canopy..sorry! will get some the next few i make!)

Yeah, I've found the 9958 canopies as cheap as 99c. You need to trim off the hideous squared-up molding around the swash area; it makes the 9958 look like the canopy was nailed together out of plywood by drunken Smurfs.
You can go to Wally World and get Krylon for Plastic to change the color; it sticks well to the PVC of the 9958 canopy, plus it comes in oodles of different colors and a $7 can will paint dozens of canopies. After that, Testor's model paint sticks OK, but the Pactra for Lexan bodies sticks better. THERE is where you'll spend some money; but hey, custom canopies aren't cheap. mnem *Stuck* |

have been using acrylic paint as a base, and top coating with my lovely ladies nailpolish.... i have a few ideas that i've been playing with for my vacuformed canopies... it's just a matter of how much weight is going to be added.... at least one is starting to look so bling it might burn out your retina in the sun!! sooo sparkly!!! will post some pics when they're done!!!!
