Thanks for the feedback. When I searched, I found this thread, but didn't immediately see the answer. Thanks for clarifying. If the color is the only difference, it's a bit hard to justify the additional $100.

does anybody know if you can power the r617fs direct from a 2s lipo? I want to run my ds610's on 8 volts. if you can't then how are you futaba guys doing it with out getting an expensive regulator. I want to plug my 2s lipo with a switch into my r617fs rx and get the spectrum 5.2 step down to run my tail and throttle servo. I just don't want to fry my rx by powering it with 8 volts.

Any help?

NO - you cannot. See the Futaba specs here:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTHL6
" Power Requirement: 4.8 - 6V" 6V MAX

That is just one of several drawbacks with FAAST vs. Spektrum....

So do think this would work?

I have the postive and negative wires on the servo's wired direct to the lipo and I the signal wires are plugged in to the apporiate channels. I have the 2s lipo plugged into my current RCE-B3X regulator. The regulator is plugged in the rx to power it at 5.8 volts. When i turn on the regulator it also powers a micro relay (you can get them at any electronic store) which closes the contacts and powers the servo's that run off the lipo direct. This way every thing turns on with the switch on the RCE-B3X and the 8 volt servo's are not always powered.

I am not sure if this would work but I can't really find any other way of doing it with a futaba system or buying a scott gray regulator.

I attached a diagram to better explain it

Yes, that will work. I have a similar setup on my Trex 700N because I needed step downs on throttle and tail etc. anyway. So I split my power/signal wires on my servos and did as you suggest but via a wiring harness and switch.

You can see pics of the harness here:
http://rc.runryder.com/helicopter/gallery/41507/
down at the bottom. It says 'Custom 8v Switch Harness' - click to enlarge.

On the left you see the plugs for the servos (in) and then those extra leads (they are just servo extension wires) are split for power and signal (so I did not have separate the servo wires themselves). The 3 signal plugs go into the Rx, the Deans is for LiPo (in) and the red plug is for Rx power (out) from the switch. The master switch arms the lot but I have gone one further and sent the Rx Power out to an Align 2 in 1 which provides regulated power to the Rx AND does remote glow duties. Clean and tidy setup without buying an expensive reg setup. Plus I HAVE to have remote glow now, I'm spoiled. lol.

I just leave the 2 in 1 switched on and use the Master Switch to turn everything on.

I will be SO thankful when everything can just run 8v.

Hope this helps.

You still have to turn on your 2 in 1 seperatly right. I am trying to eliminate that.

Nope, I leave it switched on. It gets its power only when the master switch is turned on. The master switch sends power to the servos and to a servo plug which goes into the 2 in 1...look at the harness again.

Oh this should be good. Please list the several draw backs with FASST.

You can use the R617FS at 8.4V, don't believe anyone that trusts a 2n1.

Everyone has their own opinions on power systems so it's kind of a moot point.

I've had a couple YS motors and the OS has more power IMHO. You can keep your paper statistics to yourself.

Someone needs to tell Futaba that, they say 6v MAX:

Those Align 'step down' regulators won't do what you are planning. Those step down the voltage from a regulated 6V to 5.1V. Meaning they only reduce the voltage by about .9V. When hooked up to a 2S lipo they only bring the output voltage down to about 8V from the 8.4V lipo.
