Fuel Tubing Head Dampeners
Has anybody ever noticed that the v1 upgrade dampeners look a little bit like little trimmings of fuel line?
Well, I tried just that, and it works great. I was having some vibration problems, and my tail was kicking and acting weird. I removed my old O ring dampeners, they have about 100 flights on them. The outer was sticky one worn looking, the inner looked pretty normal actually. Tossed those. Its pretty hard to trim the tubing perfectly straight, and I found that the best way was to use the head, inserting the tubing into it, and cutting against the head. It took a few tries but I got two good ones, and stuck them in. Well, vibes are gone, and the cyclic feels really smooth. $1.49 /ft versus $3 0-rings, or $16 fancy upgrades Whats the difference? Anybody compared these? |

I have done it on the V2 head and it works fine. The stock dampers lasted about one flight. Varying grades of fuel tubing have different hardnesses. I am trying the stiffest kind, and varying the length of the tubing. The longer the tubing, the stiffer the head. It will be hard to wear out this fuel line.....

You can try the craftsman handy-cut, it's made pretty straight cuts in tubing for me before. If you do two pieces at once you should be able to get them pretty close in length...

I would love it if someone that did 3d would be willing to try this out, and really compare them to the upgrade ones. I flew today, and they really are a huge improvement over the stock ones, but I am still not flying inverted, so I cant tell you how it handles 3d flight, but they are great in FFF.

I"m about to give it a try. I kill dampers all the time so its worth it to me.

Ok here is a silly question. How do you know your dampers need replacing? Do the blade grips loose or...?

Once they wear enough they split and usually cause tracking problems. If they are just worn out but not split yet they make cyclic feel mushy. When I was running the o-rings they would usually split after about a month. So far my Truebloods have lasted 2 months although they look like they are starting to split and the rubber is working its way out of the headblock around my head spacers
BTW, this is a V1 head, not V2

Will the dampers having a problem cause a violent vibration? My heli is shaking like crazy under the rotor disc. I have replaced the mainshaft and the feathering shaft. This is a V1 metal head block and I can see little fragments of the o-rings by the head block. I'm also wondering if a beginner should use more or less fuel tubing for damping. All I have here is the great planes light blue type of silicon fuel line. Will that work?

What size tubing are you guys using? I'm getting a strange vibration at the bottom tip of my tail fin. Everything's fine on the heli, but the vibrations won't go away. I think it might be the dampners so I want to try the tubing.
Thanks ~Marty

Not sure exact size, they only had two different sizes at the hobby shop, so I bought both. The larger of the two seems exact on OD of the O rings, and really close on the ID of the O rings. Most of these shops will have the stock o -rings too, so you can use those to see if they sell a tubing that is similiar.
I would love some feedback from someone on this, who isnt a rookie like me Finless? Anybody? I know someone out there could give it a whirl. If you please. This would be a great solution for many if it is an 'tested' mod. |
