Default TM1100 telemetry electric RPM sensor

I just added the TM1100 telemetry module on my align 470LM connected to the AR7700 receiver. The temperature and voltage works fine, but the RPM reads blank for a couple seconds, then rapidly changing values for a few seconds, then blank a few seconds, etc. Since the other values are all good, it seems like it could be a problem with the sensor?

Anybody have experience using this?

The problematic part is the RPM reading, the others are fine. The sensor is the Spektrum brushless RPM sensor.

The telemetry on the radio shows no value (looks like "--") and every few seconds it will turn into values in the 60K - 90K range for a second or so, changing so rapidly you can't read them, then back to the '--', then a few seconds later rinse and repeat. The instructions were very sparse, only to attach the two wires to any two of the three wires on the brushless motor, which I did (soldered on).

Have you configured the gear ratio and poles in the transmitter?
