I did the extended tail boom mod yesterday - THANK YOU!

It holds much better. My stock one was cracked and the tail was wagging pretty bad.

On the tail motor mount, I put the wires through the hole with the tail boom on the bottom in the flat spot I made. Is this what you guys are doing?

It's hard to get a good hit as he's pumping the pitch and causing the rpms to go up and down a lot, but the max rpm my audio tach could catch was about 5700 rpm.

I know this has more than likely been mentioned before, but it amazes me how much better the stock tail holds by just extending the boom 20mm.
It has heaps more holding power and i can get it doing piro flips with easy, where as i couldnt keep a constant piro speed before.
I wonder why E-flight doesn't just release the mCPX with a longer boom?

I think carbon rods are sold in specific lengths and that devided into sections evenly decided the mcpx tail length

They do finally at least have one available now....Will be interesting to see if it ever makes it's way on to production birds.

Materials needed:
2MM Carbon Rod
Dremel with cut off wheel or Xacto Knife
Sand paper
CA glue
Stock MCPX tail assembly

Step One - Remove the old carbon tube from the assembly (make sure not to damage the wires when doing so) then place the tail motor with the holder off to the side

Step Two – Measure the new Carbon rod to your desired length (approx. 1-1.5 inch longer than stock) Proceed to cutting the rod with either the dremel or Xacto knife

Step Three – Once your desired length is cut you can then cut a flat on the side of the rod like the original one. This is done by placing a piece of sand paper on a flat table edge and sanding the side of the rod to get that flat. A alternative is to cut into the rod with an Xacto about .5MM and then using the knife again splice the rod to that cut you just made.

Step Four – Place the new rod back into the frame with the notch facing downwards, once this is done you can reinstall the tail motor. Be sure to turn the motor to where its 90 degrees with the main shaft. Once desired position is set, place a dab of CA glue to secure it *optional*

Step Five – Wrap the wire around the Carbon rod and plug it back into the Main board.:

hi all.

I would like I carry out this mod, I'm just not sure what I do the the wires coming out of the tail motor holder. since they wont be running though the tail boom, I'm worried I'll damage the wires if I just jam the new tail boom into the holder since they'll be jammed between the holder and tail boom.

That is a possibility. That is why I cut my wires off and replace with cat 5 wires and do not run them through the boom holder.

thanks new bee but I'm trying to do this a simply as possible. I think cutting a sliver out of the end of the boom that goes into the holder for the wires to fit into might work?

I'm just wondering how OP (or anyone else) has done this mod without modification to the wires or holder.

This is all i have done. Desoldered the plug from the wires, so that i can pull them back through the stock boom. Then cut a piece of solid 2mm carbon and then use three pieces of heatshrink to hold the wire to the under side of the boom.

I'm pretty new to this and don't have a soldering iron. looks like I might have to get one.

If your real careful you can use a pair of small cuters and snip the old boom open to remove the wires from it without desoldering the plug off the end. It will destroy the old boom though.

my boom is destroyed so no worries about that so what do you do with the plug that goes into the board as it's too big to fit through the tail motor's holder 2mm hole that the boom fits into

Have a look at the pics i posted back a few. Just run it up the side to the main board and wind the excess around the canopy mount as normal.

I think I'll just buy a soldering iron, I haven't used a soldering iron for a long time, since high school, but it all looks pretty straight forwards. Hopefully I won't mess it up

get an old 5/1 and practice on it. I'm using the old one from a MSR. Has helped me a lot.

My best investment is this little hakko fx888 and .2mm bent conical tip. No kiddn just the tip has improved my soldering ability 100%
