OT: P38 Lightning Build
I know it's a little off topic, but I was asked for some pics, so I hope our mods can forgive it...
Here's my build of a GWS kit of a P38 Lightning. The kit comes on white foam and clear plastic, so as you can see, I have already made some progress. The first coat of paint is on and the electrics are in. As you can see in the second picture, the cockpit area for the electrics is pretty tight. The Rx is in there, underneath the ESCs (2 x 25amps) and a wiring harness to run both ESCs from one LiPo: yes....there is a 2200mAh LiPo to go in there as well! I think I'm going to need to take a knife to it and make some more space!

Twin engine planes rock ! Don't ask me why, but I was never really attracted to planes, even my former Multiplex Acromaster couldn't keep my intrest for long. It flew very well, but that's not the only matter of importance with planes, IMHO.
One thing that I always admired though is the sound, looks and presence in general of a twin engine plane. There are a few at our club, and they are a whole different ball game. There's even a foam passenger jet with four (small) motors. They feel so real, can't describe it any other way. If I would ever get a plane again, it would have more than one motor, for sure. Keep on going Luke, I'm gonna follow this thread with great interest.

I found my vid of that plane with four motors at our club, the quality is not very good, as it is out of focus a lot, but there are some nice moments like low passes over our field.

I converted an old slope soarer of unknown parentage about 15 years ago. 4 x Graupner Speed 400s each fitted to 2 dowels secured through the wing leading edge and an 8 cell 1700 Nicad. Jeez it was really heavy and took one helluva hand launch but the sound it made was pure music.

After about an hour, I managed to do it though, so now in lieu of that home made fire hazard, there is a single Deans (I know, it's a Deans, but I like them and all my batteries and ESCs are Deans and I hate soldering...OK! ). That frees up a bit of space and I can now get everything in. I must be honest, I was really concerned about cross interference from different wires; there are servo wires in there as well obviously...and the Rx is underneath the ESCs. I did take the precaution of making sure no DC wires crossed any AC wires....I know you wouldn't believe it, but it's true and there seems to be no problems with glitching at all, even with the motors on. Obviously I have only run short burst tests, so we shall see what happens once it all gets warm! The motor wires and the aileron servos run in a channel underneath the wings....yep...the same channel. Again, I made sure nothing crossed, but it is VERY tight under there (I'll do some pics later). I did enlarge the channel, but there is only so much you can do without weakening the wing. Maybe I went a bit over the top on the wire and could have run thinner ones and saved some space. My personal ideal would have been to put each ESC in the engine pod, but that would have meant running long DC wires from the battery and of course a wire back to the Rx. Long DC wires from a LiPo are apparently not advisable as you can get voltage spikes that can fry the input end of the ESC....I've been told that and it's all electrickery to me, so I believed it. So...it was the motor wires that had to be long (AC doesn't create the voltage spikes, just like mains supply). I guess in the days of DC motors, it was either take the risk or stick a capacitor in there or something.... Anyway, tomorrow the props go on and I look at the canopy.... I've got some Master Airscrew 3 bladed 9 x 7s, counter-rotating. I just hope they clear the ground. I personally hate a fixed landing gear that shoud retract and this model has no scope for retracts....so it's going to be a belly lander. That will make life interesting....

Everyone loves the Mustang and for good reason but my favorite two planes are the P38 Lightning and the F4U Corsair
Lookin good, keep it up!

nice project Luke...my grandfather had a hand in designing the tail section of the P-38...and i have a secret project in the works for one myself right now as an homage to him and my dad.....yours looks good so far!
I just actually got into my 1st twin build myself....decided to build a cargo twin to drop little green parachute army men out of this summer! gonna be cool...it is a 75% size version of the one featured on RCG....it's all depron...3mm and 6mm..overpowering the heck out of it with 2 1700kv blue wonders and some 9 or 10 inch props...has a servo driven cargo door..running 2 esc's and a steerable nose setup.... just some pics of it done if you don't mind me posting them... plane is ready to go...just waiting for the cold and wind to stop...just a short taxi on my driveway and ground test this sucker has too much thrust i think ..i reinforced my wing mounts a bunch...so i'm hoping they hold up! Should be fun....was my 1st true airfoil wing build and it came out good.... will keep watch on your progress bud Dan

I put one ESC in each boom, up in the "chin" radiators (oil cooler and turbo-supercharger inter cooler area) where air can flow over them.
I wish I had put rudders on this machine, especially as both motors turn the same direction. Nice to have yaw control.

Nice model JMD....look forward to a vid of the maiden airdrop!
Ah Clem, that's what I wanted to do; it seems to make so much sense! But I was warned off it due to the voltage spikes I mentioned. Apparently, this model handles BADLY with just one engine and the chances of getting down if you blow one ESC are minimal unless you can glide her home. I hear what you are saying about rudder control. I did consider it, but the rudders are so small and thin, and the room for servos in the boom so small that I went against it. I have heard of several people using differential mixing to give yaw control, using the rudder channel to get one engine going faster to turn her. That's something I may well look at if and when she survives a maiden!

A Clem, I just htought....
I assume from what you say that you have them same kit? Do you belly land yours? I'm intending this to be a belly lander, but I do have concerns about the props and the tail booms. I even snapped the rudder off one trying to fit the horizontal stab, although that is now repaired and strengthened with cocktail sticks and epoxy ( my best mate, is 5 minute epoxy!). I am pleasantly suprised to read that a lot of people say it belly lands OK and the only problems seem to occur if you have weak motor shafts (ie the GWS motor apparently), which can get bent! I have Park 450 motors in it and the shafts seem pretty substantial.

Luke,
I belly land mine. A P-38 looks much cleaner with the gear up. By the way, I also have the J-Power/Banana Hobby P-38. It flies quite well. It does have working rudders and the ESC's are in the booms. I did lose an engine on it (one came loose). I followed what I had read in all the old P-38 books-I chopped the power to the good engine immediately, stuffed the nose down and glided in. I thought I should belly land it, but then realized I was over a beautiful paved surface, so I dropped the gear and made the best landing I think I have ever made (with one motor dangling by the wires). I was extremely lucky. If I do surgery on the GWS to put the rudders on (I may just leave it alone), I will put the servos in the radiators, which are the blisters about halfway between the trailing edge of the wing and the tail). That should hide them. I had to add lead to the tail on mine, anyway, so I could remove that. The area of the boom, just ahead of the horrible stabilizer is weak, so you might want to put a carbon fiber rod in there (don't ask me how I know...). FMS has a new 1400mm P-38 out, which should be very cool. Please keep us posted!

Mine will need weight too. I read (and tested the theory) that 2 AA batteries on each boom, in the radiator blisters did the trick...and it was about bang on. The downside is that although it may be great now, what happens in a year when the batteries have started to leak! Lead weights it is!
There was some strengthening pieces supplied with the kit, described as CF. However, it was white and looked more like a thick plastic straw - I guess it was some sort of fibred plastic. I put it in anyway, but I'm not convinced it will be up to the job and I can see a dremel coming out to cut a channel for some CF pieces in there. My consolation is that if I don't strengthen it and it breaks, although it stops your flying for the day (or until my 5 minute epoxy sets...the clue is in the name ), it's not a major repair job.....provided of course that it breaks on landing and not in flight! ...and I couldn't agree more about the P38 looking cleaner with the gear up. I really have a "thang" about warbirds flying around with their gear down! Grrr. It should be banned! Lol.

Well.....some more work done...
Firts of all, I got the props fitted. Nightmare trying to find counter-rotating 3 bladed spinners. In the end, I got frustrated and took a dremel to a conventional one, which was probably the right answer in the first place....but not after you get frustrated. Didn't watch what the other end of the cutting disc was going and cut into the spinner as per the first pic! Ah well, on to the cockpit. I didn't take pics of this as I was painting and glueing, but it's self explanatory really. The bit I don't like is the "lolly sticks" they use at the front to lock the canopy down, with screws in the back. I slapped loads of extra glue in there (epoxy and GWS) to hold that down, hence the mess . I replaced the screws with some neo-magnets; that locks it down! You need to cut the back of the canopy away to let the elevator control rods run from the back servo. I also hogged out some more room in the cockpit area for wiring and then got rid of the lovely wiring loom I made; there was simply not enough room for it, so both ESCs got soldered to one Deans plug......oh, that was fun! So, just the decals and final connecting rods needed doing and she's in her finished condition. She does need balancing yet, and trims need sorting, but other than that, she is ready and sitting up in her place on the ceiling!
